How transparent should I be with my detailing

fresh start

My partner and I have thought about becoming totally with what we use. Writing reviews on the products we test and the products we currently use. Explaining why we use them vs others etc etc. The thought behind this is that our readers will think of is as knowledgeable in the field and trust or work more. Our readers that would actually look at these reviews and go buy the products themselves weren't likely to pay for basic detailing services anyway but would probably still come to us for more complex details.

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Feel free to advertise YOURSELF all you'd like here. Add a link to your website in your signature line with your full name and put your location in your avatar.

Just avoid spamming of products that aren't sponsored here.

Oh I meant on our own website in our blog not on the forum I wouldn't Spam products in unrelated threads. I was just curious if anyone had done this approach in their own business or of anyone thought it was a good or bad idea to be that transparent with our work. Would we lose a competitive edge etc etc?

I have personally always gravitated to detailers that branded themselves with a product line. I think it adds value to both sides.

just make sure its quality stuff! advertise that you use a $5 bottle of joshmo wax and people will think your nuts. advertise a $100 wax and people will likely pay you more.

Then again, with waxes, a $5 and $100 could be the same wax with a different scent!

I tell them I use all high end products if they ask. Most customers come to me, because someone else sent them. Its OK to talk product, but talk more about how your car will "POP" compared to anything done by the competitor. I offer to do a FREE paint evaluation and a FREE sample of any portion of their automobile. I had a guy leave the other day with one glassed out hood. The car was black which happens to be my specialty. Turns out he didn't have the cash to do the whole car. People being broke is a hard condition to rectify. You know, the old water out of a rock situation. I actually like doing "demos" on folks cars. It makes them remember me. I do LOVE what I do. Sometimes Ill stop in a dealership and offer to do a wrecked paint job for pennies. It keeps their detailers on their feet! I assure them I don't want their job....while I make it quite clear they will never do mine. Correction is hard to find in the Northeast.

Paintxpert I was just about to search for and post about this

specific topic or idea. The idea came to me last night when

looking at a buddies truck. His camper shell was smooth sided

and looked very easy to polish.

My idea was to offer free shell polish to certain customers.

I definitely would not advertise this, and I doubt that I would

suggest this to a guy who has shell Windows all over the place.

I do imagine that people would call me to polish the rest of their vehicle

after looking at the difference day in and out.

How is your "test" areas working? Does it bring customers in,

or just waste your time? Do you always do a full panel?

I guess it depends on how much it turns into dribble on your blog/FB/website. I used to be very VERY thorough with every car I wrote up explaining each product used and why. I started looking at it from the consumer side and though "geez, that's a lot of extra text," so I stripped all of that out. Now, when people come in for a gig, that's when they typically ask "what products do you use" and I tell them my big three, Megs, CG and Optimum, unless they need to know something very specific, I leave it at that.
