How to tell Clear Coat and Single Stage

So I thought that all of the newer cars were painted with clear coat but I've recently noticed that that is not the case. How can you tell the difference between CC and SS? Is there an easy way or just have to know which manufactures use what?
 
Color will tranfer to a pad with SS. I was also taught the fingernail test as well. Not sure if that's a actual way of testing though. Basically just scratch a spot with your fingernail if it actually scratches it it's supposed to be SS. But I have my doubts to how accurate that is.
