I have been doing basic car detailing, but would to further add services to my small business. I am curious on how to shampoo engines. I understand different detailers have different methods. I am looking for a step-by-step procedure on how-to and a list of recommended products.

My apologies if this is a past thread and trying to revive a dead dog. Either send me a PM, an email would be great to so not to clutter up the forum. Thanks in advance guys & ladies.

Do a search. That is the best advice I can give you on this one. Search for "engine detail" or "engine detailing" and you'll find just what you are looking for. :xyxthumbs

Thanks guyz. Thats what I was looking for. I did try the search earlier, but couldn't find anything relevant. Probably had the keywords all jumbled up.

Hosing down the engine did make me wonder if it was safe....

The main thing you need to watch out for when detailing your engine is to not get any water down the spark plug tubes. That and the fact that you'll want to avoid parts that have exposed electronics. I know people on this board who cover certain parts of their cars with tin foil to protect them during a detail. The only parts that I hose down are the painted parts along my wheel wells pretty much. If you stay on top of the upkeep on your engine detail then there isn't a whole lot of need for using water. :xyxthumbs

Agreed. The damp MF towel after drying my car is all I need to keep the engine comparment looking like new.

In this case, I think criz$tylez is referring to customers cars. Some of those might need a little more attention.;)

This engine was done using very little water being shot out of a hose. I had to hose down the sides and the fire wall, but the rest of it was done with a spray bottle, a couple of brushes, and lots and lots of towels. :D Engine detailing is less about using tons of water and more about using the right chemicals. I use a mixture of this product called Advantage and Valuguard’s engine degreaser. Works like a champ. Then I go over it with CD2 engine detailer and it looks like new again. Just don’t forget to put the oil cap back on before starting the car….. (whoops)
