How to Remove Touch Up Paint

A friend of mine just bought a used pontiac grand prix. The previous owner did a really bad job on some touch up spots.

We would like to remove them and redo them.

Is there an easy way to do this? Would a product like mothers scratch remover take them off?

If it was touched up with the touch up brushes that you buy at local auto parts stores, etc., it is more than likely a laquer based paint. If thats the case, then dampen a rag with a little bit of laquer thinner and wipe it off. It should come off very easy with a little rubbing. You will then see why laquer paint is rarely used any more to paint cars with.....no durability.

I am not sure what was used to touch it up. I assume touch up paint of some kind. Won't laquer thinner damage the rest of the paint?

If I can't remove it, is there anything I could use to help smooth it down without damaging the original paint on the car?

I don't really like abrading away touchups with compound/etc. I'd rather use a solvent-based approach.

Lacquer thinner *usually* won't hurt b/c factory paint. But it usually *WILL* mess up any repaints, so you'd better be 100% certain that the panels in question have factory paint.

I'd probably juse use Langka. It'll level the touchup if used gently, remove it if used more aggressively. I've heard that it's "just lacquer thinner with some mild abrasives" but whatever it is, it seems to work OK for me. Doesn't work as well as wetsanding/etc. but OK.
