How to remove small, light surface rust spots?

Going to detail my dad's infiniti i30 - 200k miles on it and the paint is in okay shape, but it has light surface rust spots (really really really tiny pin-***** marks, nothing huge and barely noticeable) I'd like to try to remove. Can I wetsand them out with some ????? grit paper then apply the paint/clearcoat I got from the dealer, and re-polish/wax the area? If so, what grit would I use (again, by hand, not a sander, because these are just tiny pin-***** marks so no need to sand the whole area)

Please explain the "rust spots" more.....

Are your metal body panels rusting OR are there tiny rust specs all over the vehicle (most on the rear)? Because paint doesn't rust, is this rust ON the paint or THROUGH the paint?

have you tried claying the spots? I've had success with clay magic blue clay on small rust spots. They usually come right off if they're on the surface. Make sure you add some protection after you clay.

I was going to clay it, just havn't got around to it yet - i didn't realize that clay may work for very minor surface spotting. I'll have to give that a try, thanks.

On the paint, mostly hood, trunk, roof (not certain how they got up there, lol).

Acid rain, brake dust, industrial fallout etc. You could either do a decon wash or clay or both to take care of it.

I am doing a white 05 Accord from California right now that is covered in fallout, if this is normal for you guys down south, i feel sorry for you and the cars. Up here we see some brake dust contamination on the the sides, but nothing to this extreme.

I had the same thing on my off white Rondy this spring - there was a lot. clay got most of it off, optimum polish got the rest - after the LSP, my 2006 looks brand new ... no better than that!
