How to make $40 in 30 minutes

Suggestive selling! Of course, our version of "do you want fries with that?" is more profitable.

Cloudy, ugly day with a chance of rain so my morning customers (straight wash jobs) decided to hold off until next week but my afternoon customer told me to go ahead and come on out. I had finished washing her Escalade ESV and told her I had some extra time so if she wanted, I had a nice beauty wax I could use on her truck (Souveran, of course). She said "didn't you polish and wax it about 6 weeks ago?" and I told her I had and her truck still looked really good, but with this wax, her paint would look wetter than anyone else's in Monticello Estates (her subdivision). I casually mentioned the jar of wax was $70 and I would through on a coat for $30 more. She smiled and said to go ahead.

Easy 30 minutes to apply and remove Souveran, even on an Escalade ESV. Even though I had polished and waxed it in early July with #80 and EX, adding a layer of Souveran gave instant depth and wetness to the paint, very noticable going from one panel to the other. It was almost surreal, since her truck looked really good as it was but Souveran took it to the next level.

When I finished, I had her come out and look before I put it back in her garage. When she saw her Escalade, her jaw almost dropped! She said something like 'it was so shiny before, now it looks shiny and wet". She then gave me the check and a $10 bill as a tip.

I am telling you all now, if you don't upsell to your customers, you are losing out. Stuff like a carnauba topper in between regular wax jobs can really add to the bottom line and don't take much time. Mini interior details between full details can also add up. Keep track of when each customer's last major job was so you can keep them on schedule for the next one. The worst the customer can say is no. But look at what you gain when they say yes! More money in your pocket, your customer's car looks great and their next weekly wash will be that much easier with a fresh coat of wax.

That is sweet! I bet your glad you said somethin to her. Yeah souveran never fails to impress does it? Was the #80 and EX still holding up okay with the beading and everything?

The car still had good slickness and looked very reflective. Adding Souveran into the mix was almost like coating the paint with baby oil. Honestly, until you compared side by side, you would have thought the paint was already about as good as it could be.

I completely agree with Scottwax. Never sell yourself short. You will never know unless you ask.

Scottwax- Good move :xyxthumbs It occurs to me that your customers are really lucky to have found you....that was not only a good time/money deal for you, it was, IMO, a good deal for the customer as well.

:up

If you don't ask for the sale... you won't get it. Like Scottwax said, the worst they can say is no.

ROTFLMAO :D

I do the EXACT same thing with the Souveran!

I even have them smell it as I say that it's $70 a jar.

They ALL say to put on a coat.

For me it's an extra $25 for cars and $35 for SUVs and takes a half hour.

I have a couple folks who now ask for the Soueran once a month after a wash.

Great idea to implement to make up for lost business due to the weather :xyxthumbs

thanks for the tip

time to get some souveran now...

how much better would u say it is than p21s?

On black and reds, the differnce is noticable, especially at an angle, a very nice liquid look.

The smell and cost of Souveran will really appeal to your high end clients. Gives them something else to brag about on the golf course....plus it really looks great!

I just dropped the roll of film off tonight at Wolf Camera. I have a full day tomorrow so it will be late afternoon if I have time before I skate, otherwise tomorrow night. Took 2 pics of the Escalade.

I have a related story. Bretfraz and I had worked on the wife's Camry following my first lesson with the rotary...anyhow my wife is busy working on some of her real estate deals and I come in and tell her we are finished with putting on a premium wax, Pinnacle Paste Glaz, and the car looks great and would she come out and see it. She looks at me like she is real busy so I go get the container and pass the tropical smelling Pinnacle under her nose and that does it. She is now curious about the wax.

I think women love fragrances and if it smells nice then it seems expensive to them.

It's sort of a detailing cosmetics counter sell. :)

Hey Scott,

You moved up to PC usage. Now how about moving up to a digital camera? They now have SLR bodied cameras Minolta makes a beautiful looking SLR digital. That way you could post the pictures easier plus the cost of developing would add up and cover the cost of the camera in no time.

Just an idea.;)

Uh, no. $1000+ just for the camera and that doesn't include a photo quality laser printer and the paper. I paid $305 for my Nikon N60 35mm SLR (including 2 lenses). I pay $9.99 for 3 rolls of Kodak's High Definition film and processing (which gets me the negatives, 4 x 6 prints and a high resolution picture CD) runs $17.39. It would take a lot of processing and film just to add up to the cost of the digital camera alone.

I may get a digital for stalker pics at the park though ;)

BTW, pics are in click and brag.
