How to assess marring severity?

Is there any way to figure out how deep the marring is on a car by looking at it? Today I was washing my car, and I induced a LOT of marring. :grrr It was very disconcerting, considering that I've been trying to improve my wash technique for at least a year already... But I believe that the marring was caused by my old wash mitt, so that makes me feel better :)

Whoops, went off on a tangent there.. Anyway, my question is that if the marring was caused by the washing, can I just conclude that the marring is not severe and should be able to be removed with some light polish like OP or Meguiars #80 and a orange/white pad? I'm trying to figure out which polishes to buy in order to spend the least money possible. The paint is 14 year old Acura paint, which I believe should be soft like Honda paint, I think.

Thanks for the help, guys!

EEEEEEKs! 14 yr old Acura paint! Hondas/Acuras, in my experience have the absolute thinnest CC. Mike, even marring from a clay bar isnt really significant enough to worry about. (Unless you sat there and applied too much pressure and too little lube). If done properly, the marring will polish right out with some 80 or OP and an Orange pad...... I actually think its easier to polish out marring from a clay bar, then wash induced marrings.

Patrick, you mentioned that the CC is very thin. If I have not ever polished this car before, it should be safe to work with polishes such as OP or even OC, right?

Noting that, yeah, it might have been polished by someone else, and that one *really* oughta have/use a ETG...I'd be confident that it could take "regular" polishing, certainly OP.

Judging the severity of marring can be tricky- I've been doing this stuff for a while and yet the marring on the M3 ended up being *much* worse than I'd expected :nixweiss

We bought the car used a few years ago and it has only been driven by one owner before this. Of course, I can't be 100% positive, but it didn't seem like the owner had much knowledge of cars, but he always made sure to keep all the service records (every single oil change as well!), and he never mentioned anything about detailing the car. Thus, I'm assuming that he never had the car polished.

Look for holograms - if it's hologram free, most likely it hasn't been polished. 80%+ of the shops I see can't put out a hologram-free finish after polishing.

Consider using 1Z polishes via PC - the mild fillers will help you remove a minimum amount of clear.

Heh heh, somebody other than *me* suggesting 1Z polishes  :xyxthumbs
