How many people run their PC @ 6?

Im curious now.... I see it all over this site where people are using their PCs at speed 6. How in the heck are you guys doing this? If I run my PC at speed 6 at the end of the panel Im doing the thing is really really hot. Those of you that run at speed 6 for say.. a whole car.. does your PC get really really hot?

Last time I ran my PC on 6 for a few minutes it barely barely melted the velcro center... I backed down to speed 5 and it took a while to cool off but then I didnt have any problems.

FWIW I use a heavy duty 30' extension cord and I really dont believe it to be part of the problem. Oh yeah.. and Im not covering the vents either.. Im very aware of that and I dont cover them.

Thanks!

I always bump mine to 6 for swirl removal. I use the 6" backing plate that exceldetail sells, no problems at all with excessive heat or melting like I had with 5" backing plates.

Geez, I hope you don't have a Meg's G100, because I think you void your warranty by running it that fast...

That, my friend depends on who you ask at Meguiar's!:bigups

Seriously, I don't go over 5.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to six. Look, right across the board, six, six, six, and...

Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most PCs go up to five?

Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.

Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's better? Is it any better?

Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one better, isn't it? It's not five. You see, most blokes, you know, will be polishing at five. You're on five here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on five on your PC. Where can you go from there? Where?

Marty DiBergi: I don't know.

Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?

Marty DiBergi: Put it up to six.

Nigel Tufnel: Six. Exactly. One better.

Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make five better and make five be the top number and make that a little better?

Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to six.

I run it at speed 6 whenever I am doing anything abrasive...from OHC on a cutting pad to as mild as FPII or VM on a polishing or finishing pad. Whenever I am doing paint cleaning(Klasse AIO) I run it at 4 or 5. Why not run it at 6? I never had it heat up really at all, even after deep polishing something as big as a Toyota Sequoia for 6+ hours.

I just realized this the other day that the 6" plate runs cool; which of course makes sense due to more velcro grip (less slippage) and more surface area to dissipate the heat into.

I do whole cars on 6 quite often without problems. I use the Excel backing plates and pads. My PC will get quite warm after doing an entire car on 6, but it hasn't appeared to be a problem by any means.

I've never really encountered a problem running my PC @ 6 but I don't use this speed very much. I generally spread @ 2, work in the polish at 5 (multiple passes), and do final pass @ 6 (one pass).

I used speed 6 for the first time when applying Optimum Compound and it was fine. The PC didn't heat up too much because I was stopping to apply more OC and then spreading it at 3 before bumping to 6. I think that break in between kept the PC from overheating.

Although your ext cord says Heavy Duty, what gauge is it? Should be a minimum of 14 ga if 50 feet or under. IMO

On 6, it feels like my PC is going to explode, but it is very effective for swirl removal. It seems to be more than a 1k opm difference from speed setting 5.

Ok guys.. Ive heard a rumor about a handfull of PCs that ran hotter then others. Some were exchanged.. I may have to try that.

FWIW Ive tried a few backing plates. The last was a 6"er.. first was a couple Megs BPs which were anihilated rather quickly.. then I tried Edge 2000 stuff and even that adapter got blistering hot if I tried #6.

I wouldnt be surprised if that was in the fine print. hah

I've done 10 hr details on speed 6 in 90 plus heat and it does tends to get a little warm alright. But average details 6 - 8 hrs in 70 - 80 temps no problem. For swirl removal yor waisting your time if your not using speed 6. Although your fingers tend to get a little numb towards the end because of all that vibration. Step up to the rotary and there is no crazy vibration, much quieter, far more efficient and a joy to use compared to the PC.

It may be now...I had a problem with my Meg's backing plate, and I posted about it on MOL and got chewed out by Mike Phillips for it for using the burgundy pad with the PC, and running on 6...he told me no burgundy and no higher than 5, and I pointed out that the G100 instructions said nothing about either...he said he would look into getting the instructions changed.

i run at 5 (don't like to run at 6 as it starts to get hot and a little too shakey for me), and focus more on technique. to each his or her own....

exact same here - only time I run less than 6 is for sealants...
