How many out there use carpet protection?

After just looking at a couple threads about carpet and upholstery cleaning, I started to think about something. How many of you use or apply a carpet protection product (303 Fabric Protection, 3M ScotchGard, etc.) after you've cleaned carpets and upholstery in vehicles?

I've been using 3M ScotchGard as an aerosol product for a couple years now, and I've found that it makes subsequent cleanups much easier to perform, especially on the vehicles my "regular customers" bring to me a couple times a year. Just wondered if anyone else was using something like this, and if so, what?

The ScotchGard tends not to be all that cheap, so I'm looking for possible alternatives. Or, of course, if anyone thinks there are valid reasons NOT to use ScotchGard as part of the interior (carpet/upholstery) cleaning process....

:thx

I would think that an upcharge on the detail, maybe 10-15 dollars would be suitable for applying a carpet protection. I don't think that I would include it in my normal interior detail though. As you said before, it's another cost to you and it takes time to complete when you could be doing something else.

I already do upcharge $5 for it; I'm just not so sure that I would get people to buy it if I upped that to $10-15.... part of it comes down to the fact that I want as many people to buy it as I can get, mainly to make the work easier on myself the next time they come back. (Most of my customers seem to either come back every 6 months to a year, or some more often than that -- very few that I've done were "One time only.") So at this point I'm just trying to see if there are ways I can increase my profits, other products that work better, etc.

As far as being time consuming, it takes me maybe 10 minutes to scotchgard an entire interior on a normal family sedan with cloth seats and cloth headliner.... so that particular part isn't too bad.

There are people crazy enough to buy an "interior protection" package from the dealership for hundreds of dollars. So, I would think there are definitely people who would be willing to pay more than $5 for some Scotchguard. I think it's all in how you present it.

True, but I like to think I'm a more honest business person than a dealership. And besides, the whole goal I was going for here was to discuss the merits of the products and their worth, moreso than the pricing of such services with the customer....
