How long before water spots etch paint?

The ebook says a week, is the pretty much the standard? I washed my new paint today and it was a little more sunny than i expected. Water spots are over most the car. I QDd after and it got rid of the centers of them, but left the outline. I have 3 tests this week and a huge project due. The reason i'm asking is because if i can wait 4-5 days before I can get rid of them it will be really helpfull. Also how deep with the etching be? When i do my first detail i was going to use Menzernas final polish to remove the swirls the dealership put on it. Should that do the job on the spots too?

i think it'll be on the paint, not in the paint. a year or so before i joined autopia i was parked on the street and every morning the sprinklers hit my car. the top of my trunk was left with water spots that didn't immediately wash out. i thought it was permanent but after reading up here i was able to get them out. the only thing that has etched my paint is bird crap. last week they etched my newly painted hood. f'n birds :angry
