How do you safely remove snow from your car?

Since it just snowed about 6" here, and my Jetta was outside (I leave my BMW in the garage), it got snow covered. I cleaned off the windows with the normal brush/scraper thing, but I didn't touch the paint. Now it's not really that safe to drive with 6" of snow on the car since it blows off when you're driving.

So what I did was just brush off as much of the snow that I could without touching the paint with the brush. I'm going to assume this is the only way to do it?

Do you guys use some other tool or something to remove the snow? Any other techniques?

I put on gloves and use a cotton terry cloth to brush it off. Just be sure to get it before it turns to a sheet of ice.

Yeah last snow storm when I was in chicago for a week and came back to my car, the snow melted off but was a layer of ice on the bottom and scratched the car when it slid off.

I think I'll use an old terry cloth next time, I was considering doing that this time but I didn't have any that I could spare.

I try to only do the windows and lights till I get home, then turn up the heat and let it melt off.. That is the best I know of:(

How about wrapping a MF towel or big Terry cloth towel over a broom and use that. I keep my car garaged but I have a spare towel that I use to wrap around my current ice scrapper brush and that works well. and more importantly puts my mind at ease.

I believe TaxLady posted a thread about a snow removal brush that she made from sewing a MF towel onto a snow brush. It looked really good.
