In january I got some body work done and entire front of my car got resprayed. Unfortunetly guy that painted thew car lweft some orange peal, sags and dirt spots all over my hood. I waited 3 months to let thew paint cure and just got everything sanded ands buffed by a real body shop. All the imperfections are gone but the paint isn't spotless how I thought it would be. When I run halogen light on the hood I can see some light scratches, swirls and buffing marks. Is that normal or did the body shop jdo it wrong? I decided I'm going to try fix everything myslelf since I alrweady have a pc and couple products. Just need to varify with you if I'm foloowing the right direction.

1. Clay with mothers clay bar.

2. 3M rubbing compound on orange pad.

3. Optimum compound II on orange pad.

4. Optimum polish II on white pad.

5. Meguiars gold class wax on gray pad.

6. Duragloss 105.

What do you think abpout thoswe steps? Should it fixed all the imperfedtions? Maybe I should add something to my routine or drop some of those steps? Thanks

It's "normal" for a body shop to leave swirls and trails, at least IME. With the orange peel and sags gone, I'd think they did a pretty good job overall.

Wash and clay bar definitely come first and happen to be two of the most important steps as well, but you could (probably) skip the 3M rubbing compound and go straight to compound II, unless you have some SERIOUS swirls. Even then, polish II might do the job, test'em out first from least abrasive (polish II) to most abrasive (3M rubbing compound).

The pads make a pretty big difference too, orange pad + polish II should do some pretty serious correction alone. Tape and test!

No experience with Duragloss 105, but I'm pretty sure that goes on first, being a cleaner wax and all, and then top it with Gold Class.

The process you have is down pat and should remove all your imperfections.

Good luck!

Yea since you said you can only see the defects with the halogen lights the 3M compound is most likely over kill. The Optimum compound might even be overkill as well. I would start with the Optimum polish on a orange pad and go from there. Do a 50/50 and see for yourself how good it looks and decide what to do from there.

What size pads are you going to be using because that makes a huge difference as well.

I will be using 6.5" pads. I'm gonna start with optimum polish like you suggest and go from there.

Just out of curiosity... what are you working on? Not that it matters, just curious....

If you're new to machine polishing with a DA Polisher here's couple of videos that go over the basics of using a PC, Meguiar's G110v2 or Griot's Garage ROP.

(This also includes the PC 7424, 7336, G110, G220 and UDM)

This is on how to do a section pass, this is important because with a DA Polisher you don't want to tackle too big an area at one time and you want to be thorough as you work out the defects.

I polished everything with optimum polish on orange pad and all imperfections are gone. There are maybe few swirls on the lip but besides that everything is spotless. I put a coat of duragloss 105 but I'm not sure if I suppose to. Car was sprayed in early January so it's been almost 3 months now. What else should I do at this point? Polish it with optimum polish or white pad or just leave it as is and maybe put another coat of duragloss 105?
