How bad for leathers?

Hey guy, if i can make 10,000 dollars from now till october i will probably be the proud owner of a PERFECT BMW 3 series (i think 1996) with lik 40,000 miles on it. The car is a white convertible. It has tan leather seats. Im wondering how bad it is for the leather to keep the top open just about all the time. Would i want to put the top up all times when im not in it? Man, do i want that BMW!

Boy, if I could save $10K between now and October, I might buy a used BMW too....let me know what your secret is, and whether you need a work permit for it.

Yea, im sure i will need one. My secret is working MY *** OFF! lol... Well, im planning on being a partner in a high end car storage garage and also detailing my a$$ off. Along with that, me and my father are going to be partners in an online website selling clothes. Im aiming on having 5,000 from detailing and then the rest from The website and storage garage (if it gets off the ground properly). Who knows, maybe even mom will throw in a few bucks because her parents bought all her cars when she was just starting to drive. I might have enouph money... i might not.

Not being an *** or anything but don't you have two more years till you can legally drive?

How big of a dent would a 96' BMW make on your insurance payments?

No more then a 77 911 and a 74 914 would make. lol. We are already screwed when it comes to insurance.

ANd i get my learners in October.

Not only is it bad for the leather to leave the top down constantly, but it wont take too long for someone to hop in and either steal the stereo or the entire car.

I'm seriously getting deja vu from this topic. Haven't you had like four other threads about cars you were thinking about getting? What's wrong with those historic Porsches you are showing off all the time?

LOL! They arent reliable at alll!! I cant commute to college and home with them.

I always change my mind about the cars i want. But, if i can get the money for this 1, ide def(!) buy it. Its such a great car. I love it. And ive known the car since new. My best friends father has owned it since new and he took really good care of it.

Hes a teenager constantly changing his mind. Nothing new.

Took me about a year to save up 10k (not even more like 8-9k) when I was in HS (started working when I was 16 though); making $10/hr * 20hr week. Horrible times; but after 3 years and some months:

Good luck on your Beemer. Will be well worth it.

Daniel, sounds like it's time to start upping your prices my friend.....

I had the pleasure of detailing a 95 Dakkar Yellow M3 hardtop, it turned out really nice. SS paint is easy to polish to perfection too. Nice little cars.

baseballlover1- While I *do* really like the e36 M3s (well, I like the ones with sticks better than the ones with automatics), there's no way I would *EVER* recommend a convertible for college commuting. College parking lots are *not* someplace where you want a drop-top, it's just too vulnerable to all the stuff that happens on campus (any campus).

And a 3-series Bimmer can be a vandalism-magnet...the "Die, yuppie scum!" types will key that before most any other vehicle on the planet. Just think what they could do to that soft top (ever read "Generation X"? Things haven't changed since then).

For college get a somewhat-fun, utterly reliable tank that you won't be worrying about, and that won't be vulnerable to easy break-ins. The *last* thing you want to deal with as a college student is the loss of your stuff and/or worrying about your car (as opposed to worrying about your education). Yeah, you really will leave your laptop, and other stuff you can't afford to lose, in the car some day, and that'll be the day it gets broken into.

[Accumulator taught at the local U and learned the up/down sides of driving nice cars to campus, both as a student and a teacher.]

I didn't know any of the e36s had single stage (my e36 M3 is b/c, and it's *hard* clear too), huh, learn something every day!

Heh heh, I'm still sorta like that :o so I'm the last guy to cast stones! Always some vehicle I wanna have (hence the accumulation of vehicles around here!). If you do it with enough money you're a "serious collector" ;) otherwise you're a kook.

Took my friend 15 years(He's 21) to make $250,000. He actually save up that much with no help from parent.

What kid would start planning on saving for 250k at six years old?

If I was you, Id save up my money and get a car after college. Bringing a car that you really care about to school is not a good idea. Been there done that, wouldnt do it again, ever. Or just get a beater, then save for a nice car after college. Good things come to those who wait. You'll thank me in the end, trust me.

Sorry, but I'm completely incredulous to that one (not that I think my opinion really matters, anyway). But, no help from the parents? Was this kid on his own since age 6 paying rent?

Great advice. College is a bad time to have a nice car unless you live at home and commute.

If you end up living on campus, get an SUV you don't mind getting dented and exposed to weather extremes.
