Holograms and m105 pad options

I recently had a friend ask if I could remove previous owner holograming. I did a test spot and had success removing them all with m105/m205 using orange and white pads. My question is will my wool pad which I never used remove the holograms faster And or produce a better finish? I use a pc, but have a rotary that I have never used. Thanks

I wouldn't use wool (read: wool pads, not purple foamed wool). I've used PFW pads with great success, however I dont get the same results out of my 6" edge wool pads with my PC as I do with my rotary (of course, duh)...

I would stick with foam on a PC and perhaps PFW pads, but its just my preference. But I can tell you this, I get a very very fast correction with wool pads on a rotary vs foam pads, and IMHO a much better finish...

Wool pads on a rotary will leave behind holograms of their own. If the holograms are very severe like you would find after someone using "rocks in a bottle" then I would give it a quick once over with a light cutting wool pad and M105. Most of the time though the orange foam and a PC is all I need.

I never use anything more aggressive than orange foam on the PC either...if I need more correction than that I grab my rotary. ;)

The wool pad that I have is a 6 inch purple foamed wool pad. It seems like the holograms will take a good amount of time to remove, I thought the pfw pad might do the job faster. But of it is better to stick with the orange I will use it because it worked.

I've never tried the PFW on the PC....give them a try and as long as the pad stays rotating they should be able to do more correction then an orange pad. ;)

I wouldn't get acquainted with a new rotary for this one, when the objective is fixing rotary-induced damage... especially on somebody else's car ;)

I like PFW OK via PC, but only in the smaller sizes (3-4.5"). I'd reserve ~6" pads for use via Flex/rotary, but that's just me.

I've removed awfully nasty marring with the PC/3.5" PFW/M105, but for most hologram removal via PC, I'd just use foam.

Via the KBM, you should easily be able to remove holograms with orange/M205, followed by white or black/M205 if you feel the need.

Ok thanks guys I'll stick with the foam that I'm comfortable with and save the pfw for next time. I thougt I read a lot on here about using pfw, so when is it actually used or is it only best used on a rotary? When my brother comes back home from school I'm going to practice my rotary on his car, simlpy put I can't make his car look any worse. How did you guys begin practicing using rotary polishers. Is a pfw pad a good beginer pad for practing on the rotary, I think I remember reading that was what its best used for and why I got that pad.

I got great advice for practice with a rotary from a fellow on here....grab a OLD GARBAGE hood from the junk yard or your local auto body shop and start with a pad thats NOT flat...use like a wool pad or a LC CCS 8.5in pad...you'll start to get the feel for it....and in my own personal experience when i was learning to use a rotary...DO NOT FIGHT IT !!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL LOOSE....you can ONLY GUIDE the machine...don't try to fight it.....stay loose and just be patient....I did 3 junker cars ( my paps ) before I felt confident enough to even try one of my families cars....but now i can manuver that thing around like its nothing...just be patient...and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!

What is the best light to use to see holograms, in the sunlight they stick out plain as day, while in my decent lit florescent garage I can hardly see them. I put a halogen light on them also and still couldn't really see them to well. I had to take the car back outside after I was done my test spot to check if I corrected them.

I use PFW via nom-rotaries, works fine. It's an alternative to orange foam or other not-too-aggressive cutting pads.

Natural sunlight and the 3M SunGun are the only way I ever see holograms unless they're *REALLY* awful. And it took me a *LONG* time to figure out how to see them reliably with the SunGun.

BTW, I always turn out fluorescent lights when inspecting as I generally can't see any marring (except really awful scratches) under them. It's funny...some things show up under one type of lighting but disappear under another type, you have to figure out what's best for whatever you're looking at/for.

Well the car came out great for a 1996 Subaru that has seen a lot of winters. Owner was happy and I was too. Thanks for all the help and advice guys. :heelclick
