Hitachi FSV13Y or Bosch PEX400AE?

Yeah, im another one of those ozzies who can't afford to import a PC. can someone advise me what i should get? which is better? which do u have and why did u choose it over the other? :nixweiss

Hitachi FSV13Y;

Bosch PEX400AE;

Also, what's this one? can we get these in australia?;

civicdacbiet, I bought the Hitachi on the strength of the recommendations of fellow Aussies in this thread>

http://autopia.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49943

I still have only used it once but so far I find it easy to use, foolproof and has already given me very reassuring results on the crappy WB Ute paintwork.

I got it from Just Tools in South Melbourne. You will find a link to their web site in the above linked thread. It cost $140 as I bargained them down a bit.

Bosch is 400 watt 9000-260000opm, Hitachi is 270 watt 6500-11000opm. ppl choose the hitachi probably coz its lighter and easier to use and much better known and recommended. because i dont mind the extra weight of the bosch, would the bosch's power be a better choice for my oxidation mobile?

not sure how much you would like to spend but I think that either of these will set you back a couple of hundred anyway. And I know that the Makita BO6040 is a fair bit more.. AUD$540 maybe AUD$520 if you ask nicely (Mitre 10) but this tools is worlds apart from either of the ones you mention. I've used an Ozito, which is similar to the two RO you mention. also own and Makita 9227CB rotary. The 9227 is great for removing defects and getting the surface preped to be fininshed. Although, with a bit of skill, it is possible to use the rotary to finish the detail. Using the BO6040 makes really short work of the job. ie using the BO6040 with a Megs yellow pad and #66 Quick Detailer, with a single pass I can be ready for the LSP on a car with light swirls or after using the 9227 with a burgendy pad and a compound. This is in no way possible with a normal RO like th ones you mention.

The BO6040 is also way easy to use, I can have a conversation with a friend whilst using it and not have to worry about damaging the car.

I know that the BO6040 is way more expesive, but in my books, it will pay for itself in the amount of time saved. Btw.. I always use it in forced rotation mode.

I'm actually in the process of making an adapter so that I can use the Edge 2k pads with it.. well I'll be able to use any rotary accessory with it. Once I have this done.. I'll be in detailing heaven ;)

Im gonna have a look at the ozito range 2moro, 2 ppl have recommended it to me now.

I wish i could buy the makita but its way too outta budget for me. i know its a really good ro and many ppl say it's better than the pc aswell, but looks like im gonna have to settle with something else. some other guys from another forum are talking abt a ryobi now, that has 750watt motor and weighs 3kg! now i have to check that one out too...anyone know of this model?

please keep the hitachi/bosch comments going tho, it's helping me heeps :grinno:

The Ozito is essentially a re-labelled Ryobi...they are the same machine. The difference being the Ryobi comes with a carry case and costs $10 more. I'd recommend this RO its a great machine for a great price, I have one myself.

The Ryobi you speak of is the ERO750VK - its on the website www.ryobi.com.au but no direct link as the website is in flash.

I checked out the ozito/ryobi 750 watt one with the cool handle, its a really good 1! the only thing is, ppl are saying it would be better to get a 125mm/5" so i can use 6-6.5" pads. but if someone can convince me that 150mm/6" is better, ill probably end up gettin it.

btw, does anyone know what kind of dust collection the hitachi has? While ridding of swirl-scartch marks/polishing/buffing, do u guys keep those dust canister/bag things on anyways?

one more question on the hitachi, has any1 had the FSV13Y bog down on them before, does it happen often or easily? thanks in advance.

You don't use the dust collector, because the foam pad covers the extraction holes. If you look at a backing plate, you'll holes that go into the body of the sander. It's through those holes that the dust is sucked in.

As I mentioned on another thread, I used my Hitachi for the second time on the weekend. The thing a noticed was, it seems to bog down on setting #3 & #4. It is fine on #1, #2 & #5.

Does any Autopian who has the Hitachi have the same observation or do you reckon my unit is faulty?

It really "hums" on #5.

All my pads (Meguiars + Propel + Lake Country) work fine on both 5' and 6' backing plates, so I have no qualms about using the 6' on the Ozito. If your worried, I noticed Bunnings also sell 5' and 4.5' backing plates seperately.

Yea, im pretty woried about the pad sizes, but ive decided to go with an original 125mm RO since the actual 125mm RO unit is usually cheaper and lighter in weight, and i dont think i need more than a 5" backing plate as far as surface area goes.

Someone said i couldn't put edge 2000 pads on a hook and loop RO, but i saw some edge hook and loop 6" pads on waxit.com.au. can i order these and fit them to a 125mm RO no problems?

I asked that same question to waxit and you can put the edge pads on 125mm RO (I have a GMC). I ended up getting Megs pads as I was able to get them for just over $20.

I knew there was one benefit for living in the US...how much does it cost to import one?

Well... lets put it this way.

PC plus pads USD$199

Shipping ~USD$100

~AUD$390

PLUS

750W Step down transformer ~AUD$150-$300

total ~AUD$540

Makita BO6040 AUD$539

we're better off buying the Makita over here

littlejohn, you still need to spend the $ for the pads locally if you buy the Makita, still very good points you make.

What size did u get? and did it fit ok without the base cutting up the foam when u use it?

6.5". I have used them a number of times now with no problems. You need a slight overlap of the pad anyway when you get close to things like mirrors and curves in bodywork and the backing plate is not near the edge. Don't worry as I was thinking the same as you when I was looking at getting pads. If you are unsure just buy one and try it out and you will see there is nothing to worry about. I'll get some pics of my RO with a pad tonight and you can see for yourself.

Thanks chrisx, u helped me bundles!

seeing tho i have decided to get a bosch gex125, i made a new thread on buffing/polishing pads so ppl can discuss what brand they want.

Here are some pics of my GMC RO (125mm) and a 6.5" Meg's Pad:
