Hi all.....

Dont know if im in the right place but here goes.

just joined today and after a bit of advice.

i have bought a new car and it is comeing up to 3 months old.

my problem being the slightest knock and the paint chips off to the bare metal or plastic depending on what pannel it is.

it is a mitusubishi asx in frost white.

i have had it paint thickness tested and it is 52 to 74 microns thick.

what is the standard or a good average a paint thickness should be on a new production car.

sorry if i am in the wrong place it's just that this seems the only place on the internet where i will get a proper answer.

You will find this to be very factual as time goes on...

If you have reservations about the amount of paint surface removed or the amount of paint coating remaining the use of a paint thickness gauge (PTG) is arbitrary

Note: 1 µ (micron) is 1/1000th of a Millimetre or 0.0393700787 Mil or 0.001 of an inch

• 200µ + can be expected on older cars that have been hand painted or a re-painted vehicle

• 100 – 200µ 4 – 8 Mil - normal paint thickness

• 80 – 100 µ - 3 – 4 Mils, thin paint

• 80 µ < - less than 3 Mil, very thin paint

A paint thickness reading of 4 Mil < ( 100 µ (Microns) is reasonably safe for polishing. 3 – 3.5 Mil ( 80-90 µ) I wouldn't use anything stronger than > 2000 grit polish, 2.75 – 3.0 Mil (70-80 µ) > 2500 grit polish and under 2.75 Mil (70 µ) use a glaze. The readings tend to vary from panel to panel and are thinner towards the panel edges.

These numbers are offered as a guide only, as there are too many variables to provide any more than an approximation.

Order of Magnitude (Thickness)

• Standard printer copy paper 76µ (3Mil) thick.

• A standard sandwich bag 28µ(1.1 Mil)

• Dollar ($1) bill 73.5µ(2.9 Mil)

Thanks for the welcome.

would you say i have a good argument in my complaint to paint chipping off being so thin.

£24000 is allot of money for a car to have such thin paint.
