I have an odd one that I was wondering if someone could help me figure out. I'm trying to understand the chemistry behind this in laymans terms if thats possible.
I have a SS black finish on my Police Interceptor. It's an inexpensive repaint but it looks real nice. The repaint's about 5 months old I'd guess. After I purchased the car over the holiday's I polished it and treated it with the Zaino line. It was done properly with numerous coats of Z5, Z3, Z8, the works. The car is also kept outside.
The finish has been typical Zaino durable and I keep the car clean. Foam gun, the works.
Now here's where it gets weird. I went out of the country on business back on the 2nd of the month and the wife drove the car for about a week. Since it was getting dirty she took it thru a touchless car wash to rinse it off (I'd never do that but she thought she was helping out.) Then on the 10th she flew out to meet me and left the car at an offsite airport parking. We got back on the 20th and when I picked the car up from the parking facility it was completely covered in a fine layer of sandy, dirty, dust. What a freakin' mess. It will never go back there. It must have been kept on a dirt section of their lot with a lot of cars driving by.
When I got it home I washed it in the usual way (nothing at all different) but the regular Zaino beading was virtually gone. Worse yet there was sporadic water spotting on it. It looked as if the finish was completely stripped. I couldn't do anything about it for most of the week but I did take it to a wand type wash a couple of times during the week and only used the rinse and spotless water on it. Each time the water beaded on the finish a bit more. Then this weekend it rained and I noticed it beaded even more. Finally, today I washed the whole car again with the usual method and it was virtually back to where I'd started before my trip and the water spotting was mostly gone. I gave it a quick cote of Z3 and Z8 and it looks perfect again.
What the heck was going on? Did the finish actually repair itself????
