HELP With Paint Stain

I have an 07 BMW 335 coupe, white in color. Today while washing, I noticed two spots on the right rocker moulding. I decided after washing I would tackle them with a clay bar.

After claying for 10 minutes, the spots where still there. Fine, I need some cutting power I thought, so I took out the 3m Perfect It III, 5 minutes of hand buffing, and the spots where still there. So I stepped it up one notch, Meguiars fine cut cleaner. Still nothing.

The two spots are small about 1 mm each, and orange in color. They actually look like they might be under the paint. It has the color of normal metal corrosion, which I can normally remove with clay bar, but these two are not budging.

Any ideas or suggestions, I will post pictures up here shortly.

pikkashoe- Welcome to Autopia! Sorry to hear about the staining on your new BMW.

It does sound like corroded ferrous contamination (rust) to me. Interesting that even the aggressive products didn't fix it. If I had it, I'd try AutoInt's ABC decontamination system(well, specifically the "B", acidic step) along with a somewhat aggressive clay.

Sometimes rust stains are simply there for good, nothing you can do except have the area sanded down and repainted.

You might want to have the dealer take a look at it (warranty?) but I'd be pretty careful about what you let them try, and I'd be there watching (and ready to intervene) when they do anything.

Thanks for your response..

I have a couple quick questions regarding your recommendation.

First, what exactly is aggressive clay, or do you just mean rub aggressively with clay.

Two, I too think its metal contamination, but it seems to be under the paint, like it was there before they sprayed the gloss, because I cant feel it.

I will try AutoInt's ABC decontamination system, but where can I get it?

I'd always use the clay the same way, very gently. But there are clays that are more/less abrasive than others. The more aggressive ones will leave marring, but polishes will remove that.

That sounds like something that the dealer should help with (as in, perhaps a bit of paintwork will be called for). Ferrous contamination can get into paint like a splinter will get into skin, then it rusts and causes problems. When the problems are serious it can be paintshop time.

Here you go: Automotive International - Valugard Product Line . Check out their website, they have some good info about problems like this, including caveats about what can/can't be fixed.

Whats an aggressive clay you can recommend.

I currently have the Pinnacle Clay Bar.

Thanks.

The current version of Sonus gray is aggressive enough that I marred up my BMW's hard clear with it. Said marring did polish out OK, but I wouldn't want anything more aggressive than that.

You can use the clay while the "B" is dwelling, but it'll dissolve the clay pretty fast.

Ok, cool, so I will order the sonus gray and the ABC treatment and go from there.

This is so odd, my last car never had an issue like this, yet this bmw with in 2 months is already developed this. And I just noticed I have another one on the front bumper.

Accumulator, I appreciate your help by the way! Thanks.

Sounds like an isolated/specific-to-that-car incident. I can't help but wonder if it woulda happened had the car been properly decontaminated right at delivery :nixweiss

I've been decontaminating my new vehicles as soon as the plastic comes off, and I've no longer been plagued by recurring rust-blooms, which used to bug me incessantly on my light-colored vehicles. This is the sort of thing you want to nip in the bud if possible, to avoid the stuff you're going through now. I realize that doesn't help with the current situation, but it's something to keep in mind next time.

I picked this car up from the dealer the day it arrived, and supposedly it never went on any rail freight, as it was a special order (per my salesman it came on covered transport/18 wheeler). But the spots definitely are stubborn, I am going to order the ABC this weekend and see what it does.

I tried again today with clay bar and 3m Perfect It III (for 20 minutes) with no luck. And I noticed another spot close to the two originals, unsure if it just developed or if it was there before and I missed it.

Im starting to believe its a stain, since its only localized to a small area, something from the road kicked up and got on there.

Sorry to hear you have yet another stain! Seems unlikely *to me* that it'd be something just kicked up from the road as I'd expect such stuff to get stuck in the LSp and not peneterate all that deeply into the paint, but I suppose [stuff] *does* happen :nixweiss

I dunno about the no-rail-transport.. I dunno how they leave the factory, for instance. The stains being down low could indicate something hitting panels not protected by transit-wrap, but hey, I'm just guessing.

Well accumulator, I will let you know here in the next few days. A friend of mine who is also on this board actually has a product similar to ABC, and he said he would take a look at the stains and see if he could do anything. I will keep you posted

pikkashoe- OK, I'll be interested to hear how this turns out. Best of luck with it. Gotta be very frustrating, having such problems with a nice new car like that.
