I've got a new black 911 that has some light swirls. I'm a little afraid to take a buffer to it with it being new. Should I just try using a hand polish like griots fine hand polish. I've had differing results when using the buffer with Menzerna FP and a buffer. I have the old FP and am using pads from CMA. I've had good results before but I've also had bad results on our black Audi. On the hood it looks like I put micro scratches into the paint instead of removing them. I haven't been able to remove these micro sctratches I put with IP or FP. What did I do wrong?

I use FPII and a blue Edge 2000 wave on my soft black paint via rotary and PC. Without seeing the marks, sounds like you need to work slower. Let the tool do its job with the polish.

I assume a "buffer" is a Porter Cable?

Sorry, the buffer is a PC. As for the pads, I got them from CMA, I have a yellow one and a white one. One for IP and one for FP.

Hmm. FP really shouldn't leave behind any significant marring unless it was used with a cutting pad or something.

Audi clear is hard, so once you do get marring, it could be difficult to remove.

My understanding is that Porsche clear is quite soft, so you may want to start out working by hand and move up as necessary.

I also have a black car and use IP and FP both with a polishing pad. I'm surprised you got any marring as I had some scrathes that I considered fairly minimal that would not come out. And I use a PC with mild pressure on speed 6. I was thinking that IP does not have significant cutting power and the FP is fairly mild. But that's my experience. I could not damage my black paint with IP and the PC so I figured it was fairly safe. From many other posts, I believe the consensus is that it is difficult in general to damage the finish with a PC, unless you tried an aggressive compound or a cutting pad ...
