Help! Swirl marks under FMJ

With the weather warming up I was able to wash and clay my white S5 last weekend. Last night, with the sun going down, I washed again and applied FMJ. This morning, when I buffed it off, my car was completely covered in swirl marks!

I took the day off and I've been trying to get them out with Menzerna IP on an orange pad with a PC, but I am making no progress at all! I think the swirls may be under the FMJ and the polish just isn't getting through.

or, I could be wrong.

Currently, the orange pads are the most aggressive I've got and IP is the most aggressive compound in-hand...

help?! Any ideas?

First welcome to the group...:howdy

Second, Nice car...

Third, so you washed applied FMJ which is a sealent, and then you buffed it out??? Do you mena you let the sealent sit for 24 hrs or you polished afterwords?

If there are swirl marks, it either came during the wash, drying or claying...I suspect the first two. I doubt it came from the sealent unless the applicator or the MFT you used to buff it off were dirty.

Now Intensive Polish's name is kind of misleading as its really not that aggressive...if its not coming off with that, either the swirl marks are fairly decent and you may need to go up to Powergloss, if you want to stay with the Menzerna line.

Welcome to the site

Like Stephan said you applied a sealant on a car that had swirls to start with...After you washed & clayed the car you should have used your PC with a cutting or polishing pad and some sort of polish or SWR to clean up the surface...the sealant is a LSP product and very shiny I suspect that its magnify the swirls on the paint...I would get the clay and do a section of the hood, then polish that out and see if that takes the swirls down

From what you have written it would appear that you are wrong. The IP should and will take any LSP off the paint and start to work on your swirls that you are seeing. Some days one gets better results than others. I cannot explain it but I can tell you I have experienced it. I just keep plodding along to get the results that I want on my truck. It may take a little more time than I like to admit, though.

Make sure that you break the polish down properly. using the correct amount of products and speed 6 on your PC. blk yukon has a real good web page that shows through video how to use a PC, the amount of product to apply, and how much time it will take. Very informative video. I have a link for you...Paintcare & Detailing - Enthusiasts guide to detailing check it out and read it and view the videos. This is polishing education at its best.

Thanks, thanks and thanks!

I spent a couple hours working on just the hood and got it almost swirl free. OY!

After washing and drying the car again, I pulled into the garage and, lo and behold, the all swirls were gone! Apparently, all I need to do it keep it out of sunlight! (:/)

I'm beginning to wonder if the swirl marks were pre-existing, from letting the dealer wash the car when it was in for service (I know, I know.. stupid me) or, maybe, the no-touch car washes I use often. Then again, maybe it was the clay.. it's Blackfire polyclay and it was cold outside, so the clay was pretty hard..

I didn't realize I could turn the PC up to 6 (directions say 3.5-4), but I'll try that when the weather warms up more.. CWCAD's link is SUPER helpful!

I let it sit for 12 hours before buffing.. I used a new MF application sponge and a freshly washed dragon fibre buffing towel, so I hope that didn't cause the problem!

Your welcome but do not thank me. I only wish that I was as erudite and dicerning as blk yukon. Give him the kudo's. His work is my benchmark for polishing.

My guess is that they where this already from the dealership and the touch-less wash place...those are swirls wait to happen
