I have some scratches in the Clearcoat on the Ram Air hood of My 2000 Firehawk.. They are not very deep, they are not felt by hand. I have been trying Miguiars Ultimate Compound with a Zaino Tri foam applicator today to try to get them out... They have gotten a little better, but are still there and my arm is getting ready to fall off. Any other ideas on how to get rid of these scratches??

get a 4" pad and use it by hand for more cut, get a buffer like the porter cable 7424, use more pressure. any of those can help

I have a PC7424, But prefer do work by hand, I have always used 3M SMR with great results. But not working on these scratches.

Dude use the tools!!!. Why bother owning something that is obviously the right choice for the issue at hand if you're not going to use it????

First off you're working GM clear coat... on a black car. You're already down 2 strikes and you want to try and buff it out by hand with a weak hand pad? Grab the 4" pad and actually use that PC and get the scratches out and the gloss back. You have the tools to do the job the correct way. have fun with the machine it does great things. That and there are a few really top notch guys right in your neighborhood you can contact if you really need help. I'm sure any one of them would be kind enough to show you some of the ropes.

Yeah I feel your pain! When I bought an 01 black WS6 this was a constant struggle. I think the issue is the fiberglass hood as I never really noticed too many fine scratches on the rest of the car, well maybe the front bumper. I used to drive my self crazy as the car was brand new. Instead of always trying to fix the problem I found using a good wax that fills the scratches worked best. Of course correcting the scratches is the way to go, but like someone said, GM clearcoat + black= pain.

OK, What 4" Pads do I need to get??

Get some LC 4" pads (orange, white, blue) with a 3.5" backing plate. Get some meg's 105 compound and 205 finishing polish. Top it with Souveran and you will have the wettest Trans Am in the neighborhood.

OK, Purchased some 4" Pads. And 3.5" Backing Plate. Ordered Orange, Yellow, White and Blue L.C Pads. I assume I should used the Orange Pad? At What speed should I work at?

Orange Pad, with your Ultimate Compound (it is similar to M105, just not as strong). Use the orange pad with a fair ammount of pressure on speed 5 or 6. Should take them right out.

I have the same car as you. Honestly, get some menzerna intensive, mate it with an orange pad then hit it with the menzerna final polish with the white pad.

Simple as that. This worked great on my 99.

I got swirls, light scratches, spiderwebbing. Compound was not required for my black lexus. All I used was Menzerna Power Finish on 4" green with 2 passes. Then followed by P085RD on blue, the car looks like I just got it out fresh from the manufacturer.

OK, I did as suggested. The finish looks better, but if you know where the scratches are, they are still there, Not as noticable as they were, but still there. I have a Couple of qestions. About how long do you work on one area? 5,10,15 minutes? I was using a 4" orange pad and Meguiars ultimate compound. Do I try something a little more aggresive?
