Help! Laptop issues!

Ok, so I lend my son my laptop for a few hrs, I come back to find its down! When I start it up, I get the typical start-up Windows XP blah blah blah, then the screen goes blank and reads:

SERVICES.EXE

Unable to locate componant.



The application has failed to start because umpnpmgr.dll was not found. reinstalling the application may fix the problem.



HELP!!
 
Try booting into safe mode...when the system is first started....then when in safe mode try system restore...go back a week or so ..that may work....



or you can install the XP disk...and there is a way to repair the current installation..forgot the exact procedure..but it does ask to either install XP or repair....



hope this helps..I hope others chime in and have a better solution

you either have to do a repair or get into the recovery console



either way, you need a windows installation disk. do you have one? if you do, i can walk you through the steps

This is very time sensitive.........! :eek:
 
Make sure your BIOS is set to boot to cd first!



1. Insert your Windows Installation Disk and start the computer

2. Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair.

3. At the repair console type:

expand d:\i386\umpnpmgr.dl_ c:\windows\system32\umpnpmgr.dll

4. restart



if this does not work, you must do a repair.

1. Insert your Windows Installation Disk and start the computer

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, press ENTER.

3. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

4. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.



Follow the rest of the instructions!



If THIS doesn't clear it up, you might to need to fresh install windows. But I'm sure (99.9%) this will fix it.

If by "d drive" you mean your CD drive, then you first want to go into your bios setup when booting your computer. When you first boot it will flash what key (or keys) to hit to enter setup (most of the PC's I work on use the DEL or ESC key).



Once you're in setup find the page that has your boot options and make your CDROM your first boot device, then when you boot it will look for the XP CD and boot off of that. Then you can try the tips that ifoam posted earlier to try and repair your XP OS.



When finished, and hopefully all is well, go back into setup and change your boot options back to what they were.
 
Eliot Ness is right. You need to change your BIOS settings to boot up on the cdrom. When your computer first starts (before the windows logo) there will be a message that say something along the lines of "Setup press " something..do that
 
what do you mean? "any command"



you mean commands not even inside windows?



you might have a bigger problem. maybe a dying harddrive.
 
Any windows command being implemented. Somehow I got it to the desktop. I went to My Computer to open the d:\ drive and it took forever..........Then when it opened the drive, I couldnt get it to read anything..........

If you are already in Windows then first try to restore your computer back to a date a day or two before this started:



>all programs, >accessories, >system tools, >system restore.... then just follow the prompts.



If that doesn't work, them you'll need to change your Bios setup as mentioned earlier so you'll boot off of the XP CD to run the repairs that ifoam mentioned.



If your son was surfing the internet I would download and run some anti-spyware programs (AdAware and Spybot) , and make sure you have a good anti-virus program installed and that it is up to date.
 
Patrick, go to the www.bleepingcomputer.com forums and post up your problem in the appropriate forum. I have had a lot of crap go on with my old computer, and they were nice enough to help me through it step-by-step...they know their stuff. :up
