Help installing outlet in my garage please.

Ok, I am pretty sure this is super simple but I want to make sure.

I want to take my single bulb light fixture down and replace it with a plug outlet. So, If I have this straight, all I need to do is cut the power, remove the old light fixture, and hook up a new outlet to that same box and everything should be cool right? I think it is that simple.

Oh, then when I am finished I want to stand in a puddle of water and hold all the wires with my teeth to make sure the power is back on, correct? ;)

Cool, thanks! I think I am going to tackel this twice this weekend. Once int eh garage and the same thing in the basement in my laundry room.

~One mans opinion / observation~

Check the amp rating of the fuse for the ‘light’ circuit to ensure it’s adequate for whatever you’re going to use on the ‘new’ outlet,

~Hope this helps~

You might want to make sure you get the wires connected correctly, White wire to "silver" screw and Black to "gold" or "brass" screw. And connect the ground! BTW, I am NOT an electrician, so proceed at your own risk.....:D

To make it even easier, I think you can buy a "outlet" that will just screw into the lightbulb socket. Check it out.

:lol I thought about this as well. I actually think I might just do that for now to save me time. That way, if I ever sell, I can put the original one light back in and take all of my flourescents. :D

Also whichever switch was controlling the light will now control power to outlet so the switch also has to be able to take whatever you will be running off of the outlet.

If your garage has a 15 amp fuse, then the circuit/wiring should be made to handle about 1400 watts safely. Just add up the # of watts that will be used at any one time.

:lol Now I need a new project this weekend since this one went from a couple hours to two minutes. Maybe I will rearrange my garage a bit!

This is my V-day work on the house plan by the way. The girl friend has to work so V-day will be sunday for us. :lol
