Help for a newbie please

that buffer is not random orbital, but a rotary:idea

you might want to check with a place like

www.motorgeek.co.uk (which is similar to our Autogeek, but not owned by the same people)
for a random orbital unless you have a lot of experience using a rotary ...your car is too nice to mess it up :notme: :howdy

Hi Poorboy, i see you side of the view, i know you have to watch what your doing with these but what is so diffrent betwwen the 2 n i know one just spins , and the other spins and moves about etc?, surly u would have to take care and be light with bot and only use it for a few secs on a pannel etc, or do you have to use diffrernt methods for boths types?

again i am not arguing with your view just trying to grab all the info :)

the rotary is a powerful and professional machine which can easily burn paint without proper technique and training ...it is also a great tool in the right hands for corrections :bigups
the random orbital is almost foolproof ... it does not generate the amount of heat a rotary does which makes corrections slower but much safer.
A vehicle in the condition that yours is in, probably will not need a rotary but if you do use one be very careful as a repaint can be a small fortune;)

Yes, that is what I am thinking. Pads could become a problem to purchase. Especially from a vendor that I have no history with. Meguiars and 3M have international vendors. Plus there are international detailing sites to order from.

Hi Cwcad, i have done some looking on here to find out on using the 2 different types of buffers, i see what you guys are saying the pc is a safer one to go with, where as the rotary you need to know what your doing, but the price range on these do wave, i can get a good rotary kit for aprox £70 or a good pc kit for about £200, i also found a site where they have ripped off the pc and do there own one for £120 for the kit, it is a pc but does not have the label on it etc and it says all of the pads etc will fit as well, i want to look for the rotary due to being a cheaper kit for the same quality tool as the pc but again i came here to ask the pro's and so far i have been told to stick with a pc version of the tool as its safer and i have to take this advice, i think i might have to go for a pc copy kit at round the £120, i might post up a link later just to see what you think, as i say thank you again for the help and info :)

Hi Ryan,

I look forward to future posts of your comments and pictures. Good luck in your search for the Holy Grail of shine.

I have looked in to this and i think i will play it safe and go with a pc polisher type, its a lot safer to use etc, i will have a good look round i think and with in a couple of weeks i will have a look in to ordering one :)

Again i cant thank you enough for your help, i will update soon.

Again thank you.

Ryan :)

Right people, I have done a lot, and I do mean lot, of research over the net and done a lot of thinking. After looking at rotary buffers, they do not seem too hard to master. I did think about getting one, getting a scrap bonnet and just spending time to get use to it. Being as I don’t know much about rotary buffing, I still don’t think I would have the guts in me to use one on my own car. One thing they say is "If you don’t feel comftorble in using it, you will not get the right result". I have even been watching lots of videos in doing it as well, and again they don’t look too bad. I have watched ones with newbie’s on and again one trouble I would have is stuff like the front wings and rear quarter panels as they are not flat. The arch roll is very high and you have that sharp line that runs down the side of my car. With a high speed buffer, I still think I could cause damage after I have practiced on old panels. Again don’t get me wrong, I am not saying rotary’s are no good. From what I can make out they are the best, BUT only the best in the right hands. I am a newbie to this, so I have made my mind up and I will stay away from the rotary because I don't know enough to use one and i dont think i would have the guts to try it on my car.

I am gona save £ and get a kit. Again, I have done a lot of research on this and the one I think I will look for is the new ' Meguiars G220 - Complete Sonus Kit '

G220_sonus_kit.jpg

Kit includes:

1 x Meguiars G220 Polishing Machine - 240v

1 x Sonus SFX-1 Restore Polish
1 x Sonus SFX-2 Enhance Polish
1 x Sonus SFX-3 Final Finish Polish

1 x Sonus SFX-1 Restore Pad
1 x Sonus SFX-2 Enhance Pad
1 x Sonus SFX-3 Final Finish Pad

This kit I can get for aprox. £195 delivered.

I think this will be the safe way to go about things. I only want to make polishing easer on my car, but also, panel by panel, I want to restore the panels to remove the swirls. Again, my swirls are not bad at all, but it might need some work as from what I am told BMW paint is very thick and hard.

I have seen vids and pics of what cutting/polishing and finish you can get with one of these and I am very impressed. I had a go at removing some light swirl marks by hand with scratch x and a foam pad. It worked spot on but did take a good 30 minutes to do a small bit on the wing, so i hope with this toll it will do the job.

I want to cut it, then polish it and then wax it with this kit. I might do one panel at a time (over the weekend) rather than try to do a whole car in one go. But then again, if you can get perfect results with in 10 mins then maybe I might do more.

The kit you get the cutting polish and the polish and the wax who is called 'Sonus' , do you know of these are they any good.

Again i might look in to order one at the end of this month or the next month but i have made up my mind and after what you guys have said i will go down this route :)

I look forward to your reply :)

Ryan
