Help a Black Volvo S60 paint!

The pictures below are of a 2002 Volvo S60, recently purchased by a friend of mine. When he got it, the hood was like that; I took photos showing both the passenger side (that has a normal shine to it, we've also waxed it since) and the driver side (was also waxed, then we tried polishing it with SSR 3/meg's polish/PC :waxing: using the orange light cutting pad).

Any ideas on what's going on here :( ? Clear coat gone? Something else :nixweiss ? What can we do?

Thanks!

Well, if it's regular black and not black saphire, volvo doesn't use a clearcoat on the regular black. I had a black volvo s80. Don't have a clue about what happened to the paint.

From the pictures, I can't exactly see what's wrong. Do you mind describing it? It looks like you have some paint contamination, if the photos are showing what I think they are :) I would go buy a clay bar which will get rid of all paint contamination. If you need more information about clay bars, I can elaborate, or you can serach around for better and more thorough explanations. Good luck!

It's a shame you don't have a paint thickness guage handy; it looks like it could be dye-back, but it also looks like it could be buffer haze. In the cloudy area do you see any scratches at all, like small ones (which would indicate hazing), or is it just a dull/dead area of paint?

If it is paint failure there isn't a lot you can do about it, so what I would try is:

1) Try a little clay, see if anything happens. I doubt it.

2) Try some scratchx by hand. If it starts t clear up at all it might just be haze. If it gets worse then it might very well be paint failure.

Let some other folks chime in too. There are some real paint experts here.

Thanks for the comments so far -- you can click each picture to get a higher res version; basically, the 'shiny' area is exactly that -- shiny, glossy, wax on it works like wax usually does.

BTW the black is a metallic black; with flakes.

The dull/flat side just doesn't shine. It's flat black. It has the flakes in there, if you look up close...

Yes, there were swirls and scratches in that area too (and somewhat more noticeable than the other side of the hood). We used a PC with SSR 3 (but unfort, then, with a light orange cutting pad only) which helped a bit (on the door there was a similar spot that seems to have been gone now) but a day after, these pictures were taken and it really does look dull and sad :-(

I have clay, by the way, but I just don't see what there is to clay; the paint itself is "clean" just.. well.. lacking shine. Naively, I would say "wow, the clearcoat is gone on this side".
