Hello fellow car enthusiasts,

I'm an avid detailing fanatic but never until now have had an opportunity to use a buffer.

I've recently got a hold of a buffer and some polishes as a gift and would like to know what I'm working with.

I've looked at many videos on youtube and am in the process of going through the Helpful Threads.

Up to this I've been using the whole arsenal of Mothers, claybars, instant detailers etc and Meguiar's cleaning wax.

Hopefully with the buffer, I'll get more results out of it

My detailing hobby started out with my first sports car, a 350z:

Now sold and onto another 350z:

And here is my buffer gear for now

A rotational 1 speed 3000rpm buffer with 2 cotton bonnets and a microfibre imitation lambs wool bonnet along with paint conditioner and polish/wax.

Trying to get a hold of a light source and foam pad

Would like to know what's possible with these!

Hoping to learn more here and be part of the community!

Orbital Polisher

I started off with a buffer like this many years ago; from memory it seemed to do ok with applying and removing wax. If you are just "waxing" and you are happy with the results of the orbital, then I would stick with that. It will not damage the paint unless you drop it on the car.

Con: I don't know of any cons with the orbital, because it doesn't do a whole lot except apply/remove wax.

Pro: it doesn't tire like your arm does.

A wax or sealant provides protection and may add a little to the final look of a paint finish

Polishing is a different story, it. Polishing requires a little more power and requires a backing plate with Velcro to attach foam / wool pads and an abrasive compound in order to remove surface scratches and level the paint adding both gloss and reflection.

Thank you for the welcome!

And thank you for the information,

Seems like I'll have to buy a more powerful buffer for polishing purposes :D

Would something like this suffice?

Welcome to Autopia!

And I, for one am aware, that there is one big difference between a "kiwi" and an "ozzie", or so Woody has make quite clear to me.

LOL!

Welcome, a lot of good factual information here, beyond the normal "enthusist" information on most sites

welcome taryon! if you haven't already, pick up a quality DA (there isn't much you can't do with them these days). there are plenty to choose from (G110v2, PC7424XP) and the Griots Garage 6" Random Orbital (Lifetime Warranty) which would be a great choice (link below). pair that with some quality products/pads (many to choose from) and you'll be able to tackle whatever comes your way... :)

phil @ detailersdomain has some great deals, is very knowledgeable and a forum sponsor as well... :up

Thank you for the welcome! The thing is those sure are good but just a tad over what I'd like to spend at the moment so might have to stick with this one just for waxing purposes for a couple more weeks :)
