hi folks,

first post here :) saimike from chicago. i have a dark green 91 toyota mr2 and i'm looking to get it to look better (shine?). many people have commented that the paint looks good for a car of its age. a couple of small chips here and there, but its not faded or anything. there are light swirls typical of a car its age.

i'm by no means a detailing expert ... i'll use my autoglym a few times a year max and call it a day. and this has worked for me thus far, but now i'm looking to add some bling!

where do i start on this? reading the forum, it seems that the products used would depend on the state of the car's paint -- no 1 size fits all solution. for now, i'd like to keep it on a budget and not spend a crazy amount of time on it.

suggestions?

GoCubsGo, hey northsider!

i've read some of those threads already. its a wealth of info for someone who knows his way around. but for a rookie, its better to say: try product-a for wash, product-b for clay, product-c for polish, product-d for sealant, product-e for wax. and perhaps after some mucking around, i might find that product-f is a better wax for my application than product-e.

to a rookie, whats most impt than info is a starting point -- too many options is a bad thing. my parameters are: autoglym prefered (since i still have some left), not too pricey and not too hard to use.

I know nothing abut autogylm, but most good products will get you good look. It is all about the prep. Swirls and scratches take away the gloss your paint could have. Oxidation even in small amounts clouds clear coat.

To answer "what is best?" we need to know more about your price range and expectations.

For a car wash soap, good otc stuff is megs gold class. It washes well and has decent lubricity.

I use whatever clay I can find, usually blue clay magic. If I were you I would choose wax vs. sealant first. You don't *need* both. A sealant will sometimes last longer than a carnuba wax, but not always. Looks will also be very subjective between all of the waxes and sealants.

If you want durability I would go with Collinite IW 845. 4-6 months of good beading and can be found otc for less than $15.

This might get you pointed in the right direction.

Hey mike. I'm from Chicago too and in a similar situation. I really need some guidance because reading around has got me far too confused. Good luck with your car.
