Heavy rail dust removal on a white '08 Vette, by Rasky's Auto Detailing

2008 Corvette, heavy rail dust removal

The owner recently bought this ’08 model Vette new, which had been on the dealers lot for over a year. Over all the car was in great condition with only light marring and a few RIDS, but the rail dust was bothering the owner. He had tried removing it himself using clay, but was unsuccessful. After spending some time on the web researching he was referred to me by another member of a Corvette forum.

After speaking with the owner we set up a time to look at the car so I could evaluate it’s condition. After inspection I felt confident I could remove most, if not all of the contaminates and we scheduled a time to do the car

I will say that I definitely underestimated the time needed to remove the contaminates on this car. Originally I had only factored in an extra 2hrs claying time, but I actually spent just under 6 hours doing it! While some of the specs came off rather easily, most were very difficult to remove and required many passes with the clay. One thing that definitely seemed to help was to change direction of the actual claying after a few strokes.

I’d say 99% of the rail dust was removed with only a few specs remaining that could not be reached with the clay (gap between rear glass and rear hatch).

The owner also wanted the engine bay and door shuts cleaned up.

Process:

Wash – ONR
Wheels – P21S Wheel Gel, protected with ZAIO
Tires – Amazing Roll Off, dressed with Hyper Dressing
Engine – P21S TAW and ONR, dressed with Hyper Dressing
Door shuts – P21S TAW and ONR
Clay - 3M Perfect-it III clay and Last Touch as lube
Correction step 1 – M105 via Flex DA and orange LC pad
Correction step 2 – M205 via Flex DA and black LC pad
Head lamps/tail lights – ZAIO
LSP = Blackfire Wet Diamond

Rail dust was very hard to capture in pics...

After pics...sorry, the owner showed up just as I finished and I missed a few after pics.

Obviously with the car being white the before and after pics won't justify the true diffeerence... :(

Thanks for looking, :)

Nice job. How many clay bars did you go through with 6 hours of claying and all the rail dust?

I used 3/4 of the bar. :D

We did discus using a Decon kit, but neither one of us liked the idea of soaking a $60,000 car in acid. Actually I think he was much more nervous about it than I was! :D

wow - that is a crazy amount of claying - I remember a thread from joyride a year ago or so where he ended up finding 4000 grit something that removed heavy contamination. I must try to find out what he used.

Vette looks great btw

Man you pay attention to the finer stuff I hate to see a shiny car and when you open the door and see dirt on the hinges and detailing those rubber hose in the doors is not easy.
Car looks awesome I bet the owner is real happy.

Nice work :bigups

Micromesh 4000 grit mesh fabric - I am pretty sure he had substituted this mesh for a clay bar before.

Thanks! A member of another forum mentioned that stuff to me as well. I'll have to look into it. ;)

Next time you get a white car that severe...acid. I use automagic's spoke. I did a 02 tahoe last week. I used the spoke straight with a weed killer pump and a microfiber rag. Dont get it on the glass. I even used it in the jambs and along the edges where the glass and the quaters meet. Truck looked like new. The jambs look awesome as well. The rear hatch took a few more passes but again flawless. I use the acid on a wet car after it has been washed. On chrome emblems as well, where you cant get it very clean in between the letters. Again like new. Try it next time. I really like your posts and your work!
