Has anyone tried paying for ads with google or facebook?

I am looking to expand my client base and increase business, by business only runs during the summer so I need a way to rekindle the fire every spring. Let me know if Google or Facebook ads work or anything else I could try.
 
I've done FB ads. I'm targeting about 14,700 people in my city, between the ages of 25 and 65. CPM is cost per thousand impressions.

I've tried Google Adwords, nothing but a waste of money for me. Got maybe one interior detail from it over 4 months running a couple different ads and wasted hundreds of $. I've heard some people have good luck with it, but not me in my area. There's also so much to learn about keywords and what not, it was just not worth it for me.



I had a Facebook ad running, got a bunch of people to like my page, but no sales from them even after offering discounts for anyone that likes the page.



Maybe other people have had better luck, but not me.
