Good point Don. I rarely use wheel cleaners, only prior to the next application of wax on the wheels, which is usually every couple of months. Just good old soap in between.

I dislike the tactic of letting the cleaner sit on the wheels while it eats away at dirt (and maybe clearcoat or paint or metal). This method is cited by the manufacturers who want to maximize the duration of the product on the dirt to maximize cleaning. It makes their product look like it works better. It's also better for lazy owners who think they don't have to touch the wheels with their hands.
I would guess that nobody on this forum lets the brake dust bake on the wheels. Therefore, it is not necessary to let any cleaner sit and soak away. Just use your favorite cleaner on a pre-wetted wheel, wipe gently and rinse, rinse, rinse!
Just safer, that's all. Sometimes it can take a year before damage is obvious. (I know! ) Don't risk it!
I think prevention is the key to keeping wheels and tires clean.
Clean them good the first time then protect with polymer stuff of your choice. Than weekly washings with decent soft brush makes clean up easy. To keep tires clean use a good brush and do clean weekly. Sometimes a good swipe with a wet old MT work wonders too for removing grime.
For tire protection there are several faves here:
Vinylex
303 Protectant
Zaino Tire Dressing
etc etc etc
Look for something water based and not greasy since grease attracts dirt.

Happy Birthday Rasky, may it be a great one for you today. Enjoy the day with your friends and love ones!:happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake::happybday::bday cake:
Thanks for all the Birthday wishes guys! I wish I could say it was a great b-day where I celebrated all weekend but instead I actually spent the weekend fighting with some rock hard BMW paint on a '99 M3. 16+ hrs and I was pretty beat last night.
I did finally get to watch Avatar though as my sister bought it for me on Blu-Ray. AWESOME movie BTW!!!
