Washing your car every week can be a time consuming proposition. In this day and age of rushing about, 12-hour workdays and traffic jams, often the last thing you have time for is washing the car. Yet, if you’re like me, you hate to have a dirty car. So, what do you do?

Over the past few years, a number of innovative products have emerged to help us maintain the appearance and cleanliness of our machines. The first such product was the California Car Duster, which remains a popular, safe and effective tool for daily dusting. Next came detailing sprays, which provide the lubrication necessary to remove dirt and dust safely. Most recently, the car care industry has seen the emergence of lint-free, micro-fiber fabrics as multipurpose cleaning and polishing tools.

Using my Quick Detailingâ„¢ techniques, I have reduced my soap and water washing to every-other week on my commute car, and once a month on my weekend toys. Time is only a single factor in considering Quick Detailingâ„¢. Water shortage is another. Sooner or later, drought hits all of us. It seems to run in seven year cycles here in California.

Done properly, Quick Detailingâ„¢ can reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning your car, reduce the effects of harmful elements (road grime, bird droppings, bugs, etc.), and keep your car looking sharp. Five to ten minutes every other day is all it takes to maintain a finely groomed car. A Miracle Towel, 3-gallon bucket of water and Quick Detailingâ„¢ spray is all you need. Here’s how:

Fill your bucket with water (or use your deep sink).

Rinse your Miracle Towel (or other micro fiber detailing towel) thoroughly and wring out as much water as possible. Fold the towel in half, then in half again.

Wipe down your car, wiping in a single direction only. As the surface of the towel gets soiled, flip it to a clean side. When all sides of the towel are dirty, rinse it out in the bucket, wring and keep wiping. Don’t forget the windows.

When the loose dirt is gone, rinse the towel again, refold, and spray the towel with a few shots of detailing spray. Wipe the car down with the detailing spray, giving a couple shots into the towel for each panel. Buff immediately with a clean, dry towel. I recommend a second Miracle Towel or a high quality terry cloth towel. Spraying the towel, instead of the car will insure better distribution and will use less product. A 16-ounce bottle of detailing spray should detail your car 15 to 20 times, depending on the size of your car.

When you’re done with the body, use your damp Miracle Towel to wipe down the interior. The Miracle Towel will quickly remove all dust and finger prints from your dash and console.

The interior windows will need a quick wipe down every few days. Rinse the Miracle Towel, wring until damp, and wipe down the interior glass. Follow immediately with a dry Miracle Towel or terry cloth towel. The Miracle Towel is the only cloth that can clean glass, streak free, without chemicals.

As the final step, do your wheels. If your wheels are fairly clean, simply wipe them down with the damp Miracle Towel. Rinse the towel for each wheel. If your wheels have heavy break dust, give them a couple shots of detailing spray to loosen. Using the remaining water in your bucket and the damp Miracle Towel, rinse each tire and wheel. The Miracle Towel can hold seven times its weight in water, making it perfect for rinsing away break dust. Use the dry Miracle Towel to dry and buff.

That’s all there is to it. Once you learn your car and the process, you can easily clean your car in 5 to 10 minutes. Compare this to the 45 to 60 minutes it takes to wash and dry your car with soap and water. If you did a quick detail on your car every day, you would spend no more time than you would with a weekly wash, and your car will always look freshly detailed.

If you prefer to dry clean your car, you can substitute the initial Miracle Towel wipe down with a dusting using a California Car Duster. The California Car Duster will quickly remove all surface dust, preparing your car for the quick detailing spray.

Recommended Quick Detailingâ„¢ Products:

1. Miracle Towel

2. California Car Duster

3. Pinnacle Crystal Mist

4. Eimann Fabrik Clear Pearl

5. Meguiar’s Final Inspection

6. Eagle One Wet Wipe ‘N Shine

40 to 60 minutes washing. Must be a very slow detailer if it it takes people that long

Washing takes 15minutes- high pressure rinse of body, wheels and wheel arches. Then saturate body with shampoo (foaming gun) and sponge or machine buffed cars a high pressure rinse will do, chamois excess water and buff dry with very light pressure using a thin cotton cloth (summer bedsheet)

What takes the time is the window cleaning, shining of wheel arches, wheels, tyres, plastic mirror backings, plastic windscreen area vents (near wipers),chrome polishing (if required) and 1 coat of carnuba fast wax (if required)

Washing is the easy part, it's the detailing that makes the time fly

I spent 8 hours applying by hand (only way for these products) 2 coats of prepsol, 2 coats of BODYGUARD and 1 of fast wax.

You'd be the expert:rolleyes:

DavidB, good tips. I myself use a similar method. I ALSO feel that this is a time saver compared to washing (which for me takes approx 40 minutes also at least).:up

Omikron... If you are talking about a professional detailer, you'd be right. But the average person at home does not have everything set up and ready to go.

David, I read your QD post with great interest because I park my black car in a dusty parking lot and it is usually covered with a fine layer of dust by the end of the day.

However, I am concerned that scratching will occur if I "Wipe down your car, wiping in a single direction only. As the surface of the towel gets soiled, flip it to a clean side. When all sides of the towel are dirty, rinse it out in the bucket, wring and keep wiping."

How can I ensure that I do not introduce new scratches using this method?

Thanks!

Dennis

Dennis,

I have had very good luck over a 7+ year period using a California Car Duster to remove the first layer of fine dust. I have my original CCD and still use it, even on my black 911, with no problems. Wipe and shake, wipe and shake. I highly recommend it.

Mike... sorry for the confusion... I don't wipe the CCD, I wipe (dust) the car with the CCD and shake it (the CCD, not the car!).

David

Nope, I wasn't confused... that's what I thought you meant. I just wipe the car and put the CCD back on it's post. Why shake it out?

David, I was reading you post ( as usual with great interest), you recommended using Miracle Towel. I dont find it in your Autopia-carcare website. So which other towel you will recommend now ?

Thanks David. I have followed this protocol for some time with good results on a Jet Black BMW with very soft paint. I generally alternate between a QD as you describe, and using QEW which is also a lot faster and uses less water than a full blown wash.

Well why would you want to wipe your car down with last weeks (or yesterdays) dirt ? All David means is shake out the dust material that may be hiding in the nap of the CCD.....
