Half repainted black S4, it's like two details for the price of one!

Heya everyone - story on this car is that the driver side was repainted due to an accident. Both doors, rear fender, rear bumper, trunk, and blended into the roof. As a lot of you know factory Audi paint is pretty hard, comically the re-paint was butter soft (I mean really, really soft), so it made for some fun times with paint. The rear bumper had a pretty good scuff on it which was wetsanded and removed (all except one thin scratch under the clear). Hood had some touchups that needed sanding.

Process on the factory paint was:

Menzerna PG on an orange LC pad via PC

Opt Compound on an orange LC pad via PC

Opt Polish on a white pad via PC

Clearkote VM on a white pad to clean it up.

Process on the repaint was (you'll get a kick out of this):

Opt Polish on a white pad (took out *all* the swirls, but actually hazed the paint it was so soft)

Clearkote VM on a white (which was also, hilariously, hazing the paint)

AIO on a black finishing pad to clean up. Ya, it was soft.

LSP and trimmings:

Menzerna FMJ topped with Clearkote Carnauba Wax.

303 on the tires, PB's wheel sealant on the wheels, 303 on all the trim, Nevr Dull (which rocks, btw) on the exhaust.

Sorry for non-outdoor pics. It rained solid all day, so this is what I got. Luckily the owner seems incredibly cool and I think will have me back in the future to further finesse the paint.

Interior was done too, but it's less exciting, process was a lot of vacuuming, little green machine goes to town, megs interior detailer, profit.

Yes, I did the little stripes on the carpet before I was done. :)

Cheers.

Wow theres TONS of depth in that paint. Great job! :bigups

How do you make the little "stripes" on the carpets anyways? Adds a nice touch to the interior.

I mist the carpet with water, and then vacuum the whole matt on direction, then flip it and vacuum a couple evenly spaecd lines the complete opposite direction.

Great transformation. I would have :bolt

Steve nailed it. I used to do up in one stripe then down in the next, but they were always un-even. Best way is to do the whole carpet in one direction then flip it and make stripes. :)

Thanks guys, it was a long one!

Nice transformation on the S4, I really like that particular year and styling :)

Any reason for not topping it with a wax or sealant?

The bumper was unigrit 2000 followed by 3000 then buffed out with Opt Compound on an orange pad. It turned out really well, almost completely gone.

The hood blobs were just unigrit 3000, then I polished the marring out with the restof the hood.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, Steve is right about the carpet "stripes." It used to drive my "ex" batty when I would do that to all of the carpets and cargo area in our minivan.

BTW, you can make your lawn look that way by applying the same tactic to cutting the grass. For me, though, I just want to get it done.

That's why stadium fields and golf fairways look the way they do.

PG w/ orange, then Hyper w/ Orange !!! Holee machine intensive..

Wow , nice turnover though.. would have been able to skip a step no doubt if you pulled out your rotary :D

Man, don't I know it on both accounts. I tried hyper on the orange first but wasn't making progress on some of the deeper scratches, so off to PG I went. PG of course hazed, so I needed hyper to take care of that /sigh. Audi paint. I have an Allroad next week in similar condition and I think the Makita is going to have the cobwebs blown off it. I just can't spend an hour on a hood alone. Maybe I'll do some practice tomorrow! :D

HO-LY Crap, that looks awesome!

Thanks man. Sucks I couldn't get sun pics, but what can you do about the weather? Next time!

Excellent work! Nice write-up about dealing with repaints with different hardness compared to the factory paint, stuff like that can be a real pain-even more so if they don't tell you. :o

The depth on that black paint is unreal! :up
