Griots Garage or Porter Cable 7424XP?

After serveral months, I am still deciding rather to buy a Griots Garage or Porter Cable 7424XP. I am a newbie and I prefer to work with something that will not damage my car. I notice there's random orbital and dual action orbital but I've no idea which one is good but I've heard dual action is good for beginner and it protects the paint while random orbital will is more for professional who needs to use the heat.

I am looking for something reliable (minimal breakdown) and best bang for the buck. As for replacement or accessories like the pads, I am looking for something affordable and doesn't cost too much to replace. Noobie question, can I reuse the pad over and over again? I hope it doesn't ruin the next coating of wax. Also, is the pad universal like I can replace for other generic ones or do I buy fixed ones? Would like to hear your feedback!

Supra- Welcome to Autopia!

Get the Griot's.

Plenty of people here have had the XP, tried the Griot's, and greatly preferred the latter.

I have both also, GG6 is superior in every way. I only use my PC for 3" pad duty.

The Griots has a lot more power, very noticeable, but the build quality is complete crap! I just broke my second unit in only 2 months now....the last one fell about 24" from my stool which broke the internal plastic! (see pic)

I still have my original PC that is about 6 years old and it has been fallen several times from over 4' and still works like the day I bought it. I've had my PCXP for over 2 years and it's also very durable.

My current GGDA is being held together with epoxy and duct tape! :D

I'll love the power of the GGDA, but it's safe to say after this last incident that I'll be ordering a G110v2 soon.

Edit: I also recently suggested the GGDA over the PCXP to someone who's been emailing me about polishing their car since it does have a lot more power....well, here is a clip from one of his most recent emails...

My Griots garage RO broke right before I was able to start the polishing process so I am waiting on a replacement. Just trying to get things ready for the finishing this up.

RaskyR1- Yeah, my GG didn't like being dropped either, but at least I lucked out and it still works OK. Wonder if the warranty would cover that

I wondered that too...probably not since I used epoxy on it now, but I was in the middle of a job and needed the tool. I used my PCXP while it was curing...man it sucks stepping down to a less powerful tool once you're used to a new and more powerful one! :D

I'm sure AG will replace it for me regardless. ;)

That's a good call... I've been loving the G110v2 I just recently picked up. Blows my tired almost 10 year old G100 (1st-gen PC) out of the water in a big way.

RAskyR1- Heh heh, that might be a good acid-test of the warranty, huh? Sounds like something I'd do (that'd get me on Griot's $#*~-list again :chuckle: ).

Having owned both machines, I say GG hands down. I've not had any problems with mine that others have had. I purchased mine soon after they released this newest version (spring '10 I think).

Same here as well, you can chalk up another vote for GG over PCXP.
