Hi all... Just joined after peeking around the site for a couple of weeks. Looks like a great source of information and has already become one of my favs to visit daily (others include Drudgereport.com, DC and some sports sites).
Like everyone else here I desire to have the best looking finish on my cars that is humanly possible. I am not a professional, rather a weekend hobbiest, and I feel I still have a lot to learn and look forward to learning from you pros as well as sharing my own experiences.
I have been playing around with various products and using them in different combinations over the last couple of months and I am zeroing in on some combinations that I truely love. Here are my toys and the current combinations I have been using to get the looks that me and my wife like (as soon as I get my camera fixed or replaced I will post some pics).
* 05 Honda Civic EX Special Edition - Magnesium Metalic - Lots of flake - UPC, UPPx3 (WOW, flakes-a-popping!!). Top off with UGE or Meg's SD.
* 05 Jeep Liberty - medium dark green metalic - WG Deep Gloss Products - Produces a very nice combination of deep gloss and moderate flake (my wifes car and her preference is a deep gloss). Top off with WG Sealent Spritz.
* 99 Saturn - Black w/Purple flake - AIO, EX-Px2. Top off with Meg's SD.
* All have been clayed and are washed at least weekly. I bathe my autos in either 4* Auto Bath or NXT. Only use MF's on the surface. Use Meg's tire & wheel products (forget their actual names). RainX on all exterior glass.
Fortunately I was able to start off with nice finishes on the 05's, however, the 99 Saturn is a different story. The finish has not been maintained well over the years and has a few problems that claying has not been able to take car of. Lots of swirls too. I'll be picking up tips from the forums on these and hope to get these fixed before too long.
My goals are...
#1 - Learn more about Rotary's or PCs, cuz I want to get that 99 Saturn's problems taken care of, and I feel that the other finishes can be taken to the next level if I use some power to buff 'em.
#2 - Toppers (I hope that is the right term) - I am still somewhat confused about Detailers, S&W, S&G, etc... What are the differences, are there different uses, etc...?
#3 - Continue fine-tuning product selections and combinations to get the right amount of flake, gloss and durability.
Boy have I been bitten by the detailing bug but I love it. There are few things that are as satisfying as a nicely detailed car and also the looks and comments that you get. The next time I get laid off, I'm going into the detailing business!!!
Look forward to being a part of the community!
