Gray carpet/Red soda

I detailed this Explorer about a year ago. Like most 91-94 non metallic Fords, no clear coat.

Did the entire job by hand, using Meguiars Body Shop Pro line and finishing with High Tech Yellow #26. The Swirl Free Polish really brought out the black plastic trim.

Magnum Upholstry cleaner, a scrub brush and a wet vac. Luckily Ford Thunderbirds have reasonably plush carpet so the stains weren't too deep.

2 months later when he had me wax it, the interior was trashed again. Not really stained, but garbage everywhere. :nixweiss

Are u sure that Explorer had no clear? Had a '94 Ranger (chassis for Explorer) and it definitely had a clear, was a different shade of red, can't remember if it was metallic on not but I don't think it was. Nonetheless, excellent work Scott. Btw, is that a '92 Explorer?

Just remembered that Ford had huge clear-coat issues in the late '80's, thus they were using clear coats before the Explorer was even introduced. Why would non-metallic Explorers have no clear. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am truly puzzled.

I think in the early 90s, Ford only had a clear coat on its metallic colors for the Explorer. They offered two reds, one was a dark metallic red and one was regular red. Mine is the dark metallic red and it has a clearcoat, but I think the regular red did not have one. Of course, this is just what I'm pulling out of the cobwebs in the "completely useless information that I know for some reason" section of my brain, so I could be wrong. :D And yes, Ford had a big clearcoat problem with its vehicles around this time. I had some problems with my roof and hood and was able to get Ford to OK a repaint for those areas, and from what I have been told, I was very lucky to have them even look at it, let alone fix it

That Explorer is either a 91 or a 92, BTW.

Scott, great work! :bow

peace

Thanx for the info Malibu. I agree that the Explorer could be a '91 or '92 but I don't think those rims were available in '91. As far as the non-clear issue I'm sure it could be, but it just seems weird.

Dave-without exception, every single non metallic paint 91-94 Explorer (white, red or black--or should I saw chalk, pink or grey) I've ever detailed has not had a clear coat and severe fading problems. Every single metallic paint 91-94 has had a clear coat, although I did detail a 1994 Ford F-150 with a metallic purple paint job that wasn't clear coated.

As recently as just 5 years ago, many car manufacturers were not always clear coating non metallic paint. I have a customer who has a 1996 Mercedes SL600 that is white and non clear coated, and I did a mid 90's white Accord that didn't have a clear coat.

Thanx Scott for the clarification. Malibu, don't even get me started on that scandal, or should I say Ford's enormous blame game. Granted, Firestones are not the greatest tires in my opinion, but I don't think that they were the sole cause of those roll-overs.

To answer a recently posed question about the Explorer, I used Meguiars Swirl Free on the black plastic trim between the windows and the mirrors. It works great on most non-textured black plastic trim. Test in an inconspicuous area to be sure it will work.
