Good relationships with detailing related businesses can really pay off

I try to keep up with companies related in some way to detailing, like glass replacement companies, upholstry companies, mechanics and body shops. The body shop I recommend to my customers is a very high quality one and they did a great job on my Accord about 4-5 years ago.



Anyway, I went up there yesterday to have him give me an estimate on my hood. At some point, it must have been repainted because under real bright light or parking lot lights, you can see several lighter stripes in the paint, as if when painting the base (color) coat, the strokes were not overlapped properly. You can only see it straight on, at an angle you don't. Still, it does bother me.



I pull up and immediately recognize a black BMW 540 that I have been taking care of through 2 owners. I also noticed a purple ML 320 that looked familiar. I look in the window and see the aftermarket floor mats on top of the factory ones. Aha! Another customer of mine. I go inside and he mentions the two vehicles and I told him I recognized them. He then mentioned a customer of mine with an S55 had called him that morning and was bringing his car by at the end of the week (he backed into a pole). He then looked over my car, said he agreed with my assessment on what caused the lighter stripes in the paint and then said he'd repaint my hood for his cost only, which is about $70. He will sand down my hood, reshoot the primer, base coat and clearcoat and wetsand, cut and buff the hood. He needs it for 2 days, so he said to give him a call in a couple weeks when he slows down a bit and he will get me in.



Then he took me out to lunch and paid for it. :cool:

I hear ya though. I refer all my customers to the same body shop and mechanic. It pays off because I get large discounts as well. It's nice when it works both ways :)
 
I have a similar relationship with closeby bodyshops. Very important to our success. (Well, ok, they dont buy me lunch)



They told the folks at Progressive Insurance about our work, and now we are (after several jobs) their local prefeered provider. Quite sweet, actually.



In a day or two, I'll post pics of 96 Ranger - severe smoke/soot pollution. We did a complete removal of the interior, complete! And then we put it back together...

BTW, all three of those customers of mine have used this body shop in the past. Obviously, I am not the only one who thinks his shop turns out excellent work!
 
Word of mouth advertising is the best kind of advertising. That's awesome to hear this networking worked out for you.



An old adage my grandmother told me was: Telephone, television and Tel-a-(insert woman's name).



$70 is his cost. What is the cost per hour for labor at body shops in your area?

Best perk of all? When this guy fixes a customer's car, I don't have to spend time removing swirls, overspray, etc. In addition, every customer who has used him thanked me for recommending the shop.



I lucked into knowing this guy. He lived next to one of my brothers about 5-6 years ago. My brother mentioned to me his neighbor owned a body shop. I met him and looked over his own cars both of which he had repainted and I was stuck not only by the lack of orange peel, but also the lack of any overspray in the door jams, etc. Then my brother wrecked his car and took it to his neighbor's shop. I was seriously impressed when I saw the car. The only reason I could tell the car had been repaired was the lack of orange peel in the hood and fenders. I could find no overspray under the hood or in the door jams.



Good paint and body men are hard to find so naturally, I want to maintain a good relationship with him. BTW, he is State Farm's highest rated body shop in the Dallas area.
 
The shop I took the '02 Max for repairs is one of State Farm's and Allstate's highest ranked shops in Chicago. Absolutely no overspray.
 
Eric-sorry, I missed your question. I don't know what other body shops charge per hour but his rate is $36, the maximum allowed to be a premire choice shop for State Farm. Mechanical repairs are $65 an hour though.
 
That's awesome. I'm trying to get in good with the local garages and such. A friend of mine is a mechanic at one and he took a few of my cards for me and will give them out to people that ask for detailing services. Sounds like you have a sweet deal going.
