Good.....cheap rotary?

Anyone know where I can pick up a decent rotary before I go to a porter cable?

I'd rather learn using a "decent" rotary before buying the big expensive stuff.

Also...pads for it as well.

That polisher is the the same as the Vector which is sold at Auto-Zone. I have one and they are very nice especially once you look at the cost. The accessories that come with it are a joke. Throw them away. I use 3M pads which can be found locally at any Car Quest or auto paint supply store. All of the pads plus the backing plate cost more than the polisher. But they last.

I hear Sears caries a decent model for $50, has anyone heard anything about that model?

I'm going to check that out tomorrow, and the harbor freight one as well

That's like saying "I want an apple, before I step up to oranges."

The rotary is a totally different tool than the Porter Cable Dual Action (PC).

The logical progression (to me) would be to learn the PC, before stepping 'up' to the much more powerful rotary tool.

Perhaps a little more reading is in order...

Agreed, if what Xtreme Racer meant was a cheap rotary versus a PC dual action polisher like the 7424. I assumed he meant before spending a lot on the Porter Cable Rotary like the 7428.

Hey, extreme racer, I'm in Aurora as well. Good luck with your decision. Just remember any searches for the PC should be typed in PC* as the engine will not find two letter words.

I have never used a PC before. I learned with a rotary. If you take your time, you can become a master of it and never need to look back at a PC.

PC's are for girls lol

j/k guys

Hey COBRyan, you think its safe to try it on your finish? Just go fast over the surface instead of staying in one place like the PC?

I purchased a chicago rotary over at harbor frieght locally. At the time, I never used the PC and just jumped right in. To be fair, my car is has been repainted a few times and has SS paint. Since, I used a wool pad with the rotary, I had to follow with a foam pad and the pc to get out the hollowgrams out. This weekend, I experiemented on a black car with a clearcoat and it worked great. Its funny, when I use the PC, it seems like slow motion. Im looking foward to doing a full detail with just the PC to compare.

Definitely safe. Just keep the RPM's down at first until you get the hang of it. No need to go really fast, just quick enough so you don't keep the pad turning in one section to create too much heat. But you also want to create a little heat to aid in removing problem areas.

I recommend you try it out on a spare panel if you have one, or try on a junk car if you can find one. My neighbor has junk Volvo that he wants me to detail (for free  lol) but it wouldn't make any difference if I was new to detailing and burned the paint. Maybe you have a friend with a car like that who would lend you his ride?

Also, be sure to keep the surface wet with polish or whatever you are using. A dry pad is what creates problems. Also, no need to press down too hard on the rotary. I notice a lot of beginners dig too hard into the paint. Just use enough pressure so the rotary stays where you want it to be. Firm and steady, but still allowing it to move freely at your will.

I think I'm going to order it, I can't afford a PC, so this will be a nice jump up, and its more practicle.

Thanks for the help, and also, what pads should I use with the rotary?

Picked up the Chicago brand polisher @ Harbor Freight today... if anyone is picking them up in store bring a printout... my store had them at $39.99 but price matched it down to 25. Can't wait to test it out tomorrow!

Wow that is a sweet deal for $25 - I just placed my order. Proper Auto Care sells the exact same rotary with the Vector name on it for $70 and I was seriously considering ordering it - until I saw this thread. Thanks ZJ JIM 96!
