GM ready to repay govt loan, sees chance of profit

Black Bart, if that report is correct, it is surely good news for the American taxpayer. I do hope to see a public accounting of actual (real - not book) dollars repaid -- dollar paid vs. dollar loaned and there should be some amount of interest since this was a loan. I don't know of many (really no one) who wants to see GM fail.

If you think the only reason I *personally am anti-GM or Chrysler is because they are "American" companies, then there's nothing else I can say. I thought I would have made my point clear in previous posts that it was due to begging for handouts, continuing to run a poor business model, a strong-handed union, lack of innovation, continuing to put out crap vehicles, and the fact that even though they have an unfair advantage over every other vehicle maker that sells in the US they still don't have a pot to p*ss in.

Perhaps I should start waving my flag a-la Hacksaw Jim Duggan, running around shouting "Amurica!" and starting fights with Russian dudes.

As I've said numerous times before - I am completely against propping up and rewarding a poorly run company just for the sake of the fact that they're "American." I don't know how that makes me un-patriotic or an American company hater. I'd love to see GM turn it around and put out some cars that are world-beaters.

Strange that you take such offense to my post.

I mentioned no names I just stated that it would be good news to anyone other than a person who wants to see them fail.

I can direct you to a forum where several openly state they would love to see them fail so they are out their.

Didn't hurt my feelings either. But if you were directing it to those people on that "other forum", how are they going to see it here? :D

JaredPointer, I think you need to open your eyes a little wider. Have you even actually looked at any GM vehicles lately? Like, say, the Cadillac CTS, Buick LaCrosse, or the upcoming Buick Regal? Or the Chevy Volt?

I find that usually, the people who still spew anti-GM rhetoric like you just did are people who will do so regardless of what GM puts out or what changes they make to their corporate culture. If you're not willing to be open minded and give them a chance, GM won't recover.

I've got news for you: the people who "begged for handouts" are no longer in charge! The people there now are focused solely on bouncing back and improving GM's corporate culture and product offerings.

I considered a Chevy truck when I was doing my selection. I settled on the Ford F-150 FX2 (Sport). Really preferred the styling compared to the GM offerings and as I mentioned there was plenty of negative reviews on the GM mid-sized offerings.

As for your short list, with the possible exception of the Caddy CTS, that is a pretty boring list (apologies to Tuscarora Dave :)) and no I would not ever consider any of them, including the Caddy.

Sure did - I considered (heavily) a Chevy Z71 truck when I was looking to buy full sized (September 2009). However out of two Chevy dealerships, I got two guys who could not take the time to call me back. I'm still waiting on two telephone calls about what sort of out the door pricing it would have costed me to drive off in those trucks. And folks wonder why Chevy has a hard time selling vehicles.... I get that same treatment every time I visit the GM dealerships around here. Surely it has to be like that only in my town here....

While I agree that GM has improved some offerings, they still have their crap (just like everyone else does). I've ridden in a co-workers Malibu (or possibly Impala, can't tell the difference) and it's a rattletrap. But I do have to say I would consider a Buick if I were looking into a sedan purchase. They have some really nice looking offerings.

You're right though, a lot of GM hate comes from the last 20 years or so when they kept piling crap on us. I still think they need to do more to get rid of that image. And they need to re-vamp the dealership outlets (around here anyway).

In short - I gave Chevy a chance - it was the #1 truck initially out of three when I went out looking. But the total package is still not there yet. But it was a nice truck, I'll give you that. They have improved their offerings. However, it's up to GM to make sure they turn it around. As far as I am concerned, we as consumers and taxpayers have given them enough "free passes" already. It's time to sh*t or get off the pot, and no one can do that except for them.

EDIT: It is gonna take more the a couple of years with a couple of good models to erase the negative image the domestics have gathered over the past 20-30 years.

It's unfortunate that the dealer franchises in your area are run that poorly; there isn't all that much GM corporate can do about the day-to-day operations in its dealerships aside from provide training and resources. Doesn't mean dealers will follow that advice though. I've seen just as bad at other brand dealers too, but then at the same time I've had some excellent experiences at GM dealerships as well.

Either way, you were doing it wrong.... the GMC truck from a looks standpoint is a FAR nicer vehicle than the Chevy!

What model year Malibu? The current 08+ ones, or one of the "bug eye" models made from 04-07?

For the most part I've found the newest ones to be pretty darn good where build quality is concerned. The older ones weren't so great, however.

That again sounds more like a franchise owner issue than a GM corporate issue. Around here, all the dealerships have been remodeled within the past 2 years or so. GM offers to subsidize these updates, but dealer owners have the option not to take advantage of the opportunity.

Oh I totally agree, it's going to take some time for GM to win people over again, and it will also take more than just a couple months for GM to bring out new and improved product (and there's a LOT of it in the works! To add a few to the list, there's a new Aveo coming, Chevy Cruze to replace the Cobalt, another update to the Malibu, etc.)

My take-away point here is that things ARE changing; the real problem stems from the fact that we're in the age of "instant gratification." People expect to get everything RIGHT NOW instead of being patient and letting change happen.

OK.... so what WOULD you consider? Or rather, what would you like to see GM come out with?
