Glass polishing question

First off, I owe so much thanks for every member on this message board for all the shared knowledge:bow . I tried the "newspaper" method of polishing my windows, and boy does it look killer. Looks awesome, and puts my old newspapers to good use, what's not to like?

Anyrate, my question was this. Other than making my windows look dynamite, does polishing the glass have any other benefits?

Will it make water bead up better similiar to Rain-X? Does it help reduce dust/dirt collection? Anything else?

Thanks

Using a liquid glass polish is like using a mild chemical/abrasive cleaner. It removes dirt, road grime, rubber marks from wipers, stuff like that. Glass is porous and the cleaner you can keep it, the better it will look.

There aren't too many polishes on the market. Zaino, Detailers Pride, Griots, Autoglym and Duragloss are a few of the mfrs. Nothing from Meguiars, Mothers, 3M, etc.

Right, like I said, that was very clear (get the pun?) to me right after I polished it.

What I am wondering is other benefits other than the obvious, clean glass? Reduced dirt/dust pickup? Increased beading, like Rain-X?

You'll get increased beading, and as a result of the glass being polished, your wiper blades will glide effortlessly over the windshield. As far as reduced dirt/dust pickup, not really.

I do a fair amount of highway driving, and polished glass is a real bonus in a heavy downpour!

Great, I really love the beading provided by Rain-X, but it really doesn't leave my windows looking real shiny like glass polish. But if polish does the same thing and leaves my windows looking better than I'll stick with that!

THE answer: polish any way you like (I use Autoglym) and top with VM. VERY slick and very shiny. I will have to try the newspaper thing--too many people talking about it for it to not work.

I dunno if the newspaper method is as good as glass polish, but it did shine up my windows and was free.

One thing I'd recommend if you do use the newspaper method is protect your hands. I read up about how the ink can run off and get on your hands, so I wore a disposable doctors glove and it worked great.

Funny thing about the newspaper method is how well the newspapers dry the windows. Dare I say, the newspaper dried the glass faster than any cloth, MF or Terry, that I've tried.

Never tried the newspaper method... will give it a try one day. But for now, I'll stick to using a MF. I'm getting excellent streak-free results, so I'm a bit reluctant to change. I used to hate cleaning glass until the discovery of MF. :bow

One Grand makes an excellent glass polish. www.onegrand.com

For some reason it's not on there web site now. I just bought some from Top Of The Line a few months ago.

use it by hand or orbital

carzzz

PK1, awesome idea. Well when i use Rain-X it always leaves a haze that I can only remove when I wash the car. My method is that I apply rain-x first buff off and then wash the car. But maybe after I wash it then I can buff off the water with the newspaper, and hopefully it won't remove the rain-x...
