I was reading on another forum about stores that are selling gift cards but plan on closing some stores if not all of them in January...There is no law preventing them from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as 'Bankruptcy Planning). Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about.




Circuit City (filed Chapter 11)
Ann Taylor- 117 stores nationwide closing
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's to close 150

January
Cache will close all stores
Talbots closing down specialty stores

Good tip, I was looking into getting gift cards for my nieces and nephew from Discover cash back rebates and they were trying to talk me into buying gift cards for their "partner stores". I told them I just wanted to get the Discover debit cards, for more flexibility to the recipients, but now that you mentioned all these companies going under and/or downsizing that was probably a good choice on my part (despite their $4/card charge, grrrr).
