GIF compressions

I'm in awe of your photo abilities. Me, I'm just trying to get decent (and UNRETOUCHED!) pix onto the web. I learned here that GIF gives a lower file size. When I click on Photoshop's editor, I have to choose a compression (0 to 100). What compression level do you all prefer for a sharp image that won't take eons to load?

For best results, don't use .gif for photos . . . .gifs are limited to 256 colors, so photographs converted to .gifs often end up having a "newspaper" look to them because of all the dithering.

If you want lower file sizes with .jpgs, check your photo editing software. Typically, you can choose the compression ratio you want for your .jpg when you save . . . more compressed == smaller file sizes, but also some degradation of picture quality. You can play around with the compression to find a good space/quality compromise . . .

Thanks, Tort. So that's why my recently uploaded pix look so poor to me. I got the tip to use .gif to make my avatar, so I just generalized -- thought I oughta use that format for all my pix. :o "We grow too soon old and too late smart," as the feller wrote.

www.xat.com has a free image optimizer that lets you chose the format, compress, crop, resize, etc. I usually post 500 x 333 or 600 x 400 jpegs that are around 50k in size.

I usually use about 92% jpeg quality and 30-50% compression. If you look in my gallery, you will see how well they still turn out. Starting with print film helps though.
