Hey guys i ended up on this site after looking for detailing info for new car care as i am buying a 2012 black vw passat tdi. I ordered the car with the 3M film package but not the diamond kote interior and exterior 5 year paint warrantee as i wanted to do the cleaning/detailing myself. my last vehicle is/was(i have not received the car yet)a 1991 GMC 1500 and i really have no prior knowledge, just what i picked up on this sight in the last week. i am hoping for any advice on what i am planing on buying and if anybody knows any tips/tricks with vw paint or anything like that would be appreciated.

-guzzler waffle weave microfiber

-cobra supreme 530 microfiber

-ez detail weel brush

-some grit guard inserts

-klasse total kit

-sonus shampoo

-sonus high gloss acrylic spritz

-CG light duty blue detail clay

-el cheapo microfiber

-sonax wheel cleaner

-opt. opti-bond tire gel

-ONR

-stoner invisible glass

-poorboys bold and bright tire dressing

-Einszett windshield wash concentrait

-Griots garage glass sealant

i am getting two tire dressing mostly because i am indecisive about which will work better as a wheel/trim/exterior plastic dressing.

and if i am forgetting any critical item please let me know. thanks.

My first thought is if you are new to this don't get a black car. Heck, even if you are an exceptional detailer, I wouldn't recommend a black car. It is seriously like a part time job to keep swirl free.

Your list looks fine, just a caution on the Cobra 530 gram MF towels. You will need to cut the black hem off of them, they will mar. My local Optimum distributor sells the same towels and first thing I do when I get new ones is to cut off the black hem. Don't worry, once washed they won't fray where you cut them. Not sure I'd go with Klasse on black, I'd go with Werkstat instead if you want to stick with an acrylic based system. Klasse will make black look almost silver at an angle, its like it is too reflective. Black paint looks best with something that give the black more depth and Werkstat does that a lot better than Klasse.

At some point, you will need to get a DA polisher and pads so read up in the machine polishing forum, tons of great information in there.

I don't see any mention of wash media. Here are a couple of suggestions: For conventional washing Merino wool wash mitt, auto wash mitt, sheepskin wash mitt For ONR washing Neatitems | Deep Pile Microfiber Mitts I cut out the threads used to make the finger dividers and then insert a grout sponge from Lowes.

Also saw no mention of a drying towel/method--if you have an electric leaf blower use it to remove the majority of water and then perhaps this WW towel to blot the remainder of water Neatitems | Micro Fiber Waffle Weave Bath Towels It also comes in smaller sizes and is very soft and durable.

You might want to consider HD POXY in place of the Klasse. It would give great depth as well as long lasting protection and a little goes a long way--very easy to use HD Poxy (16 oz) [422OZ16] - $19.99 : High Definition Car Care, Eco-friendly auto detailing supplies As Scott mentioned eventually you'll want a DA to remove swirls and HD UNO and Polish are great products for those of us new to machine polishing. You may as well start reading about polishing now so you'll have some ideas and questions when you move to that level.

Free shipping code for the POXY is fs25 I believe good until the 30th.

Also here is a good website to shop for detailing supplies https://www.autoality.com/store/pc/home.asp They carry the Carpro mitt and they offer free shipping for orders over $50 while most require over $100 or $125.

I wanted to be the bad guy, but Scottwax beat me to it.

Don't get a black car. Period. I just had a brand new black Passat in for an Opti Coat treatment. The paint was already a huge mess. The good part is that the owner is an older gentlemen and not the type to obsess over the paint. Boy, would he be pulling his hair out if he saw what I saw. Initially he "thought" the car is mint because it was brand new. Don't listen to me, but at least consider Scott's advise and go for silver (my suggestion).

Thanks for the responses. i guess i should have said that i will be using the wash and dry methods i have read about on the sight ie. ONR as a pre soak(spray bottle) then two bucket method with the shampoo. as for drying, the guzzler towels would do i thought(no rubbing just lay them on the paint and let it soak the water up) and i have a small air compressor for the nooks and crannies. as for the finishing method the klasse looked like a well put together kit but if it is not right for a black car i will look on and find a different LSP as well as different shampoo and QD( i guess the sonus stuff is all meant to work with the klasse), the only problem is living in canada(snow for 6-8 months at -40degree weather) its tough to keep a coat of wax on something, as well as actually buying products, the best sight i have found is Eshine and that is where i am ordering all this stuff from (if i order from the US i have to bay a dutie fee at the boarder and that can be expensive), and they don't seem to have any good wash mitts in stock yet(although i will wait to place the order until i can get a good one/one's), so now i guess i am looking for suggestions on the finishing products, and i appreciate the concern on the colour of the car but this model of car(the TDI) is on a ridiculous waiting list i have already been waiting for it for two months now so if i want a change of colour it would be way to long of a wait, and i am dead set on a black car ha ha the look so good, plus i don't mind putting the work in and jumping in with both feet on a black car. thanks a bunch and again any opinions on a shampoo, LSP, and QD for the black is appreciated.

Sorry I didn't notice you were in Canada. As far as durability and a reasonable price you can't beat Duragloss 105--6 months of protection is very common. The best way to apply it is to mix it 4 parts 105 with 1 part DG601(Polish Bonding Agent). You can then do a second coat within 2 hours if you like--afterwards just maintain with Duragloss Aquawax (spray) until spring. It's not a wax, but a sealant, but does have some wetness to the look. In the US it is carried in CARQUEST Auto Parts stores and I believe Carquest has stores in Canada, but I don't know if they carry Duragloss products.

You should really put OPTI COAT on the car to fight the Canadian weather.

As far as the color: (and I hate to be right in this instance)

1 - you have no idea how much actual effort it really takes to care for flat black paint

2 - with 8 months of your winter, your car will look gray in the snow most of the time. Might as well, buy a dark gray.

3 - back to the color, because you sound like you care about it - it is not just that you have to be careful with washing/drying, even if you are extremely careful washing it, you will mar the paint.

We have seen many members like yourself over the years. Not one ever came back to the forum actually to report back. You know what that means.

But it is your money and the color indeed looks great when the car is clean. If you start seeing the scratches, don't be too discouraged. Just do the best you can and enjoy the car. Join vwvortex.com excellent forum for VWs.

PS: think about opti coating your car.

Thanks a bunch. With the opti-coat is that a sealant that I can add I wax over to add depth to the paint and use a QD on and such, and if so what wax would you guys recommend I thought I heard CG 50/50 was good.
