getting a new axle (rear end)!

PA DETAILER

DETAILED TODAY?
EPIC FAIL!
the xterra has 6k miles now. i noticed on my trip to work the rear axle (locker) light, along with the ABS and traction control lights came on/off/flickered. ok. made a appt. friday morning. the electronic rear locker axel sensor is toast. nissan replaces the whole rear axle if this happens. everything. gears/rotors as ONE UNIT. holy crap! they will have the new unit within a week. about 3/4 of a day to install. thank god it drives normal and the 4wd works. kind of shocking for 6k miles. but at least nissan stood behind it. i really love the xterra and would not be happy in anything else. this makes me feel no different about it. do the repair and back to enjoying it! just proves about life......you never know what can happen.

Too bad. I am glad Nissan stood behind it.

My Dakota rear end started failing around 70K. It cost over $1K to fix and took three trips. It was just repairing the gears and bearings in the hub. The axle bearings were ok.

thank goodness the warranty covered it. i can imagine what the dealer would have charged you for the fix and it wouldn't have been cheap.

That's pretty quick. The most I've had to do on a rear axle is replace an axle because a bad bearing wore a groove into it. While I was at it I did a few other maintenance things. I think it cost me around $500. I didn't replace the housing or anything else though.

yea. being the rear locker sensor is at fault, nissan is instructed to replace the whole rear axle as one unit.

There always seems to be a manufacturer that has a model that seems to have a bug. For me I own a 2012 Camaro with an automatic and I come to find out that there is a known issue with the torque converter on them. Why does it seem like no matter how much a person research the vehicle they are interested in that you never find out about major issues until 6 months into ownership. So far mine has been holding together. I guess the problem is when driving around 45 MPH and add a little pedal the car starts to shutter and I guess it feels like you are driving on rumble strips.

Dean. :D

installed and ready to go. they called first thing this morning and took it in. had it back by 1:30pm. just in time for work. hope this never rears its ugly head again!

props for the dealer taking care of it fast.

Couldn't remember this thread till you called me

I absolutely cannot believe Nissan has not corrected this issue by now. If you look around, its been a common issue since the 2005 debut of the D40 series. Keep an eye on it, there's also a known issue with the rear end that it develops excessive slack. My Frontier (had the same locking rear end) at 70K was getting slopping and starting to clunk.

I'm glad you're getting a hole new rear end. Most are cracked and need replacing anyway.....:D

My bad.....:rofl
