I was down to the local Kmart last week ... all they seem to carry is the new "antibacterial" Dawn. I've been looking around and it seems like all the stores are carrying this new version of Dawn.



Is the old Dawn still made ? Does the new stuff have the same old properties that we need ? Does it have any new properties we need to avoid ?

The old dawn is the "Original Formula". It is blue and yes it is still made. Look for it at any grocery store. They may only sell the "Ultra" concentrated version of it now.

I would avoid the antibacterial ones. They may leave a residue as most antibacterial agents (triclosan, chlorhexidine, etc) leave a residue to have some prolonged effects against the bacteria. Ron K has said that it probably isnt a big deal since you are diluting so much but I would go with the original.

The ultra is cool...the original is hard to find try closeout stores like big lots and such..they tend to have older products.



The ones with stuff in them to make hands soft or smell great or kill this or whatever have stuff in it that may leave a film after rinsing.

The original, on the far left, is still available but you have to look hard to find it amongst the latest offerings. I have used the apple scented Dawn for around the house and I used it once to wash the hood of my truck. It does smell good, the antibacterial is nice for washing your hands and I didn't notice any residual film after using it to wash my truck.

By the way, I just picked up a big bottle of the good kind of blue Dawn from Wal-Mart. They had a bunch of them, and I would have never guessed that it is being discontinued or it is hard to find. They also had a huge selection of all the other Dawn's in two different sizes. Oh ya, and it was under two bucks for the big bottle.

I hear you buddy. I hear you. Some that come to mind are Scotchguards original formula, original Miracle Towel, Dawn, Eagle One Concours Tire Shine and many many others.

The fast acting blue works great. No residue at all (and my car is a dark graphite gray). I used it once to wash my car and I use it every week to clean my tires and my wheel wells.

The PowerPlus dark blue unscented non antibacterial works very well also. No residue. Left the vehicle squeaky clean. It says it's stronger than the regular so it should take off any sealant or wax on the vehicle.

One more thing about "anti-bacterial" soaps or shampoos of any kind, I have found out that they are no good for us folks who do not live in the big city. It kills the bacteria in your septic system, and all you wind up with is a holding tank, instead of a septic system. Not good.



I also mentioned this before, but the new Dawn has a small sticker on the front that says sheeting action, or fast action. Do you think they have put a silicone oil or something to assist in the sheeting action? Will that leave a oil residue on the finish that will inhibit our sealants and or waxes from adhering to the finish? Just food for thought. Enjoy!

Don't really know about other brands. I guess one is about as good as another. I was lucky enough to stash 2 small bottles of the original Dawn away, on a shelf, last year.



Quite a while ago, we had a very in depth discussion about surffactants on one of the threads. I believe we had 2 gentlemen, both named Tom discussing what makes a good soap. We also had Ron K. pipe in with some info. No doubt the thread started on another subject, and we would never be able to find it. But maybe some of the veterans on this site can recommend what would be a good dish soap to strip the gunk from our finishes. Anyone???? Enjoy!

This is a rare 1993 black GMC Typhoon that I detailed about 5 months ago that only had 30,000 miles on it. This was a return customer of mine from the white NSX correction, and he wanted this rare gem to be as fresh as possible.

This detail was a little different then usual, I had no convenient water source near by, so I had to pre-fill all of my buckets and sprayers for the wash process.

That being the case, I thought that it would make a perfect time to use some ONR (Optimum No Rinse Wash). ONR is a revolutionary product for the car cleaning enthusiast, It enables you to take one single 5 gal bucket and 2-3 gallons of water and wash your entire vehicle with only a few drops of water on the ground. with out any rinsing- hence the *No Rinse Wash*

I was a bit skeptical about this product at first but I have grown to love it! it can really save a lot of time and water.

ONR is designed to encapsulate the dirt particles to prevent them from scratching the surface. even Without a pre-rinse. And it slightly adds a protection to the paint as well. *it does work,as long as there isn't mounds of mud on the surface, then you would need a pre-rinse*

Lets get this going and we will discuss more as we go. Here is what I had to work with.

I Began by presoaking the wheels with Chemical guys Diablo wheel Gel letting it dwell for a bit. I'm not to big of a fan of this product, and how it doesn't break up the brake dust like P21s does, but it's ok.

Here are some of the tools and products that were used in the wash process

I began by pre-soaking the engine compartment with APC and then agitating it with Various brushes to brake up all the grime.

When you do the engine degrease process out in the sun you have to make sure you keep the fenders and cowl panel and all surrounding panels wet, if not the degreaser will dry up and damage the paint surface.

Then I used a pump sprayer to rinse (sometimes you just gotta work with what you got, and in this case, no water close by)

Then It was treated with 303 protectant

Now back to the wheels, I sprayed down the tires with some APC and the agitated them to get all that nasty brown off of them.

Once they were finished I used the pump sprayer to rinse

Next is the ONR wash which is kind of hard to take pics of, only because it is simply to wash on wipe off.

I added 2 cap fulls to about 2.5 gallons of water.

I used a Grout sponge which does a great job of picking up the dirty and keeping it from marring the paint. Soak the mitt/Sponge in the solution and give it a slight squeeze and then just wipe the surface with light pressure(just let the mitt do the work, dont grind the dirt into the paint or it will scratch or marr)

Then wipe with a damp Microfiber towel and wala! that area is clean.

The car was brought in and clayed, taped up and I took paint measurements to make sure the paint was safe for correction.

all of the lower part of the typhoon was a satan black so I had to make sure I didn't get any compound or wax on that area.

I'm glad I took measurement, the paint was all over the place on the meter, some 5's a few 8's and even a few 2's :scared:

So now that I know what I am working with, I first removed the roof rack, that way, I can get to the whole roof.

For the correction I used my FLEX 3401 hydrotech cyan with M105 and Hydrotech Tangerine pad with M205.

here was a test spot.

looky what stopped by for a visit!

After compounding and polishing, Blackfire Wet Diamond was used to seal the paint.

Here is the Final outcome!
