G35 meet - black '04 coupe versus Opt, Menzerna, Sonus, PB's and the kitchen sink.

Hey everyone. Some of us GTA folks had a "PC training-day/meet & shine" meet yesterday where I was to detail an '04 coupe from the ground up and let everyone throw questions at me. It turned out really nice, the weather was great, turn out was awesome - the actual detail, well read on!

So inititally I planned on doing two full cars. It didn't work out that way, the '04 coupe that I originally thought would take 2-3 hours took almost 8. A lot of that time was spent explaining processes and answering questions (which I had planned for), the rest was because it was the G35... FROM HELL! :D

When I first saw the car it was morning and the sun wasn't really out. I washed and clayed and was greeted by this:

No problem, right? So I rolled it into the bay and turned on my halogen lights.

The owner is a teacher, and while he takes care of the car the very nature of his job seems to entail kids near the car, rubbing against the car, and possibly dancing on the car. Aside from the swirls there were a series of scratches on the hood and near the passenger side rear fender (above the gas cap) that were hideous. I don't even want to know what made them (dirty push broom, maybe?). You can see them in the befores (1, and 3).

Process was:

-Wash with P21S

-Clay (the clay took off an incredible amount of goodies.)

-Test rear fender with Opt Hyper on an orange LC pad...no progress.

-Test rear fender with Menzerna IP on a yellow pad...some swirls removed, almost no progress on scratches.

-SFX-1 on a yellow pad. very little progress.

-SSR3 on a yellow pad. A ton of hazing, almost a sinful amount. A little progress. I was a little worried at this point because I though I'd have to do the whole car like this they take two steps to remove the haze.

-Menzerna PG via a yellow pad. Finally, success. Low to moderate haze and some noticable improvment. I tested this on a spot on the hood and was equally impressed.

Now I was going to break out my rotary, but it was a "PC training day", so it would have defeated the purpose. Luckily PG saved me.

-3/4 of the car got PG via a yellow pad (all fenders, hood, rear deck, tops of doors).

-The entire car got Hyper via orange to clean up haze (and remove marring on bottoms of doors, trunk, roof, and bumpers)

Some areas were wetsanded. I did the top passenger side of the hood with 2000 and 3000 unigrit to take out some of the deep scratches, got them about 90% out. Some spots on doors (people rubbing against them, etc..) and quite a bit on the rear decklid. I used the Hyper to take out the marring.

-Opt compound on an orange to further clean up the finish, finally I was haze free.

-Menzerna FP and some AIO to make it bootiful.

-RMG on the entire car via a black pad.

-EX w/carnauba over the entire car via a black pad

-Nattys Blue

- PB's trim restore on trim, 303 in wells and megs shine on tires. Interior got megs interior cleaner/dressing, vacuum, leather cleaned and conditioned (z9/z10). Glass and jambs got OCW.

I rolled the car out into the sun after polishing to illustrate to the guys that prep really is 95% of the job. It's kind of amazing how many people think wax is a fix-it-all and will make any car look good. I think they all got the point when I rolled it out with nothing on it (after isa:water rubdown) to show them the difference and how good it looked.I tried to get as many full sun shots as I could, it was 7pm at this point. The swirls were 100% gone, some of the deep scratches are not coming out... I'd say I got them 92.5% out. :)

Oh, before anyone says "the wheels are dirty", his front wheels got an acid bath that was left on too long - the stripes are the result. They need re-finishing.

Afters:

You can still see the long scratch on the decklid I wetsanded. Not sure what caused it but I don't think it'll ever budge.

Thanks. :)

G35 paint is a real pain to deal with. It's soft, so it scratches easily but it doesn't polish out easily (in my experience), it kind of takes some finessing rather than just straight-forward abrasion. What I mean is I find it's better to use a medium combo (like opt compound on an orange pad) and do two passes than it is to do say, Hyper on a yellow pad once, so it takes more time and can be frustrating. Black G35 paint likes to haze and likes to hold on to some scratches. I've gotten the hang of it now that I've done like 10 of them... but it does take a lil' learnin'. Maybe Scottwax will chime in with his experience (which seems similar to mine).

Dang it Picus, every time I read one of your posts, I want a G35!! :D

Nice work!

Uhoh, my secret identity as a Nissan sales rep has been revealed! :nana:

Actually I'm on my way out to do... yes, another G35 right now. They're like cockroaches. :)

you have a couple of fotos there that are just outstanding! Nice work! The black looks wonderful.

I was re-doing the hood on my car this weekend. I ended up using the Optimum polish. I really like that product and it corrected about 85% of the defects. Now the rest of the car looks "less good" in comparison and I may have to do so more panels... :o

Nice work as usual! And recalling another thread you recently posted, I caught your G in the background wondering.....WTH??? "He's cheating on me again"! LOL If you want another black g to do, feel free to visit NY! I haven't had time to give her a post winter polish yet!

yes, i've found infiniti paint to be pretty bad. on my fx the paint mars very easily and picks up pits from road debris incredibly easily but doesn't polish out easily. plus it chips when you just look at it. nissan really needs to up their paint quality, at least for their luxury brand. it's literally enough to make me think twice about buying another infiniti.

Thanks everyone. :)

I actually moved her over to take some pics with the freshly cleaned coupe but I forgot to change the ISO so they all look crummy. I'll never hear the end of it! :D

The wheels are still dirty... :D just kidding.

Awesome transformation! :bigups

I will be doing mine soon, hopefully. I have some swirls and a few scratches that don't seem to be too deep.

The most abrasive polish I have at present is SFX-1. I was going to use this on a 4" Yellow pad. Do you think that I will make any progress with that combo?

Yes, definitely. SFX-1 is pretty aggressive and on a 4 inch yellow it'll definitely take out moderate swirls. Remember, I was dealing with not only swirls (which came out relatively easily), but actual contact marring from metal, kids backpacks, people dragging boxes across the paint, etc... For regular swirls SFX-1 will probably even be overkill. I find SFX-2 on an orange very sufficient on G35 paint with light swirls.

A good example: this car (05 coupe: http://gtaindetail.com/pics/04g35c042506/) had moderate swirling but no real scratches. SFX-2 on an orange pad and then SFX-3 on a white pad just to make the paint purdy and I was in business, 99% of the swirls were gone.

Gotcha.

I was going to start with the SFX-2 just to see what it did for the marks that I have then move on if needed. The tops of the car may need the SFX-1 in my case since it has the most imperfections. I have marks on the roof that look like the previous owner (or dealership) used a water blade to dry it.

I appreciate the info.

Same experience as you. Really weird paint because it is so prone to marring and hazing, so I go up with the polish before the pad. I'm fixing to post a black '04 and I've polished it every one of the 4-5 times I've waxed it, although heavy just the first time. Now I am simply continuing to refine the paint, certainly helps the owner is very meticulous himself and takes great care when washing it.

Absolutely superb work on that G35, the paint looks incredibly deep, rich and wet, like you could reach your arm into it and never touch metal! :bow :bow :bow :bow

What are you using to refine the paint Scott? Prime Strong? VM?

Vanilla Moose a few times, Carnauba Prime this time, should have the thread up in a few, uploading the last of the pics right now.

Incredible work there! Results speak for themselves..

If you don't mind me asking, what wattage is that halogen spot light you used?
