I do a lot of detialing for the Toronto Mazda 6 Club as its become a hobby that i enjoy so much, i can't help but help out others when they need it.

Attached is a picture of my weekend project. I will be wetsanding and spraying. Here is my issue. The clear coat from the manufacturer requires 3 days to cure properly. As I am in Ontario, Canada and its quickly become cool again curing is going to be an issue.

I wanted to "bake" the clear caot, but the maunfacturer is not recommneding it...why not?

With the cool temps, and rain expected I have no choice but to speed up the curing time...is there anything someone could recommend to me?

I really want to bake the clear so that at least I can be done with it in a day...is there something you guys can recommned to me?

Are you planning on repainting the area or just wetsanding and applying more clear? It seems as though the scratching has broken through the color and substrate layers.

If you plan on a repaint, how much is the customer willing to spend?

How old is the car and how long does the owner expect to keep it?

Do you plan on blending to the edges or painting right the edges?

I wouldn't worry too much about the cool weather. Get it painted on Thursday and ask to leave it in the shop garage over the weekend. Pick it up on Monday. As the garages are typically pretty warm it won't be an issue. Personally, i'd follow the manufacturers recommendation. If the shop warranties their work (which they should), by not going with the recommend application procedure will almost certainly void the warranty.

geez, what's wrong with people these days? seems like alot are getting their rides keyed... :down :angry

I am planning to repaint, and yes blend. The owner is paying me $225 to do the work. The work will be done in my Uncle's shop, but it can't stay there for the weekend.

The car is less than 6 months old, and they owner is planning to keep it.

I do this as a hobby, and have made it clear i don't warranty my work. he was quoted over $800 to have it fixed, and because i have done this before in the summer it wasn't an isssue and it was fine....but now its cold and i may run into problems

Also, that is one of the worst incidents I've seen of keying. Either the scumbag (aka, keyer) was especially terrible, or your friend has some idiot who really hates him. The picture carved out makes it rather obvious

Agreed, never seen it that bad....I'd definitely be utilizing my insurance on that one.

Nice anatomically correct key-job. What scum bags...I would also involve insurance with this matter, absolutely ridiculous.

For that rate, even if you have problems with curing and you need to sand down the panel and start again, he'll still come out ahead.

That's a pretty big job there.

$225 for 2 panels (rear quarter and door), wow that's low. Between the cost of the paint, clear, sanding materials, buffing supplies etc. That's quite quite low. That's gotta be a good 5+ hr job.

It would awesome if you could take pictures as you go to see how you handled the situation and what the outcome was like.

With it being such a new car and such a horrible keying, i'd be inclided to get a pro to do it in a proper paint booth since it's a very large area so that you don't get dust in it and let it baked for a bit to flash cure it a bit.

It looks liek last minute he decided to go with a pro. I was really looking forward to this project as it would have been a great job to have in my portfolio :(
