Ok, a friend of mine had bird crap land on his car and it made a small stain. He went alittle overhaul and used something he says is a polishing compound on the area to remove it. He wasnt too clear on the details. then he used a polish on it and he did this several times and I think he just over-worked the area, anyways now the paint he says is very dull and greyish, I'm thinking he wore off alot of his paint and it cant be fixed but you guys tell me, here is a picture he sent me.

Looks like exactly as you described. He probably used a rubbing compound which is roughly equivalent to wetsanding. Now he needs to use progressively less aggressive compounds to bring back the shine and remove the fine scratches (which is what the hazing is). A good couple of rounds with a PC and 3M SMR or #9 should do it. If not, he'll need to go to a more agressive compound such as FI-II or maybe Meguiar's medium or heavy cut compounds (or DA polish from the body shop line), and follow up with a SMR. That should have it back as good as new!

what is 3M SMR, I've seen alot of you guys talk about it but not to sure what it is? and what is a PC... polishing compound? Thanks for your help too!

Fry'd,

A word of warning - that looks like the scratch I tried fixing with rubbing compound on my wife's truck just BEFORE I broke through the clearcoat.

Be VERY gentle here on in with a polish or you may do the same.

No telling how much clear he removed in the process.

It starts a a small burnish and gets bigger and bigger as the ring of clear gets larger and ends up looking like a whole where the clear transitions to the removed clearcoat area.

Look like crap now.

Please be careful!
