What is the best lubricant to use for claying? Quick detailer, car soap? I currently use zaino all the way and i don't want to waste my zaino wash as lube. Could I used meguiars gold class shampoo or meguiars FI? Thanks!

It depends on the brand of clay. Some clays recommend you use an instant detailer typer of product, others say that car wash soap is acceptable.



Some clays will soften too much if used with car wash soap, as an example.

I'd suggest you do as the manufacturer suggests for proper results.
 
Lube is a choice. I prefer a car shampoo/water mixture. Or I clay after washing while still wet with new wash mix.



I use QD for small spots I notice after I have cleaned and dry.
 
I use Zaino Z7 wash for the lube. It's not a waste, after all it's only a cap full going into the bucket. OR, if you mixed it in a spray bottle it would only take a few drops of Z7. If your already using Zaino, the Z7 wash is perfect lube for claying. I don't see why you wouldn't want to use it. Think of it this way, your washing your car with Z7 and using it for lube too, two birds, one stone. :D

The Mothers Instant Detailer is awesome for claying. Lots of oils in it make it super slippery!



I think the Mothers QD is a very good product. A lot of people say it streaks easily... Well that is true. If the surface is at all hot it streaks like nuts!!! But if you can apply it in the shade the Mothers QD puts down oils that make the surface of the car shine like crazy and it is produces one of the slickest surfaces I have seen from a QD.
 
I recently read somewhere that an 8 to 1 ratio is fine for clay lube. One ounce of car shampoo to 8 ounces of water.



And I believe that Gold Class Shampoo will work just fine. Enjoy!
 
I use Z7 mixed with water, I have used Z6 but I think that I like the Z7/water mix better. I use it like 10 to 1 in an old spray bottle...
 
How do you use car shampoo? It sounds like a good idea because it is so lubricant, but I don't understand how it works. Do you put it in a spray bottle? If so, how would you rinse off the car wash when you are done? Do you do it while you are washing? Wouldn't that dry the soap and cause problems? PLEASE, don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to be a wise asss, I'm just trying to learn a new (and possibly quicker) way to clay!!
 
Just add 1 to 2 ounces of auto shampoo to a 16 ounce spray bottle and shake well. Apply liberally to the surface and clay.

When complete with the panel, rinse off with a hose or wipe with a cloth.

Some detailers do clay while they wash, and then rewash that panel after claying.

Most of us usually wash our vehice after claying and before polishing to get any residual soap and clay off before we start applying any product.

If your paint is in excellent condition, you can go right to your sealants, but most of us like to polish if we find any defects or stains in our paint.

Remember, a great finish is 90% preparation and then 10% wax or sealants. Prep the finish right, the rest is gravy! Enjoy!
