Four Star experts,...need help

I just got my 4* stuff delivered, but am not sure how to use the Ultimate Swirl Mark Remover. I will be doing everything by hand. After I apply it (what would be best,...foam pad or microfiber applicator?) do I start to buff it off right away or do I let it sit for a certain length of time? It does not say on the back if you just apply it then wipe or have to let it sit for any amount of time.

Thanks you.

The 4 Star SMR is not one I have used, but any other SMR I have used required a lot of rubbing to do any good. It was definitely not wipe on, wipe off.
When I used Meg's #9 SMR by hand, I used it with a piece of cotton terry towel for an applicator.
Then I rubbed and rubbed and rubbed and................ I think you get the idea. I basically worked it until it was dust, then put on some more and did it again. It is lots of work to remove swirls by hand.

Thanks Charles,
I wonder if I really need to use it. I think I do,....looks like the dealer left some buff marks and such,....and a weather has been at the car with no protection on it. My guess is that I do,.....I guess I will have to rub and rub and rub. I wonder if I can get a pic of the paint that might show if I need it. I will try.

Any comments as to whether I really need to use polish? Would just using a paint cleaner be good enough?

Thanks,
Steve

Hard to say without seeing the paint, but it probably could use the SMR. Why not try one section where you know you have swirls with just your paint cleaner and see how it looks. If you feel it does need the SMR, again, just do one section so you know how much effort it will take.
You might want to do the SMR a section at a time over the period of a month. You could use your paint cleaner and LSP on the entire vehicle even though you just did the swirl remover on one section. You will waste some product, but you might not get as frustrated.

Of course the solution is to save your money and buy a PC and some pads.:)

Thanks for all the help charles, but no cash for a PC right now. Hopefully soon.

I agree with Charles . Try to do a one panel at a time . Its going to take alot of elbow grease and you might tend to skip sections and get frustrated . try a fender or a rear 1/4 then wax/seal the entire car..

Understood.:)
Don't get too discouraged about taking care of your vehicle without one. I did it for years. Yeah, it was more work, but it still got done.

Thanks guys,
I know it will take me a LONG time to get my car (and I have to do my dads too) done,...but I have a lot of time right now and im learning how to do all this stuff as I go. I still have the old nissan I used to drive in the backyard,.......so I am using it as a test panel for my stuff. Its paint is pretty roughed up,........I am gonna see how much I can improve it with what I have,.....should be fun. I will get pics of all the stuff and put them up for ppl to see. I have some work cut out for my dads car,......mine is only 2 months old,....so its basically pretty new.

It might help if we knew were you were, one of us may be close enough to help.

I am up in Toronto, Ontario Canada,............as far as I know, no one is close,.....but it would be great if someone was.

I use 4* SMR from time to time. IMO, you really need a machine to get the true benefits from this polish. You might want to call Dwayne at premium auto care for some advice. I'm sure he'd give you a good process if you have to apply by hand. Good luck.

I'm a huge advocate of using a machine to get the best results with ANY swirl mark remover.

Hand polishing to remove swirls is like an aerobic workout. You can't just "apply and remove". Your hand has to be moving very fast, like a machine, to get most the abrasives in swirl removers to start breaking down and doing their job.

If you are doing it by hand, the Wolfgang Polishin' Pals do make polishing and waxing by hand much easier with an easy to grip handle.
