Ford Truck Owners Wanted

Mr. Clean

The Man Who Knows The Man
Specifically those with V-8 Triton engines. Did you choose the 4.6 or 5.4 option? Why? Have you been satisfied with your choice? How long has your truck been in service (mileage)? Any unsuspected service issue(s) encountered?

I purchased the 5.4. Two reasons, I tow a small trailer and haul "stuff", so I actually can use the extra power and I just don't like the "small" engine in anything I buy.

As far as being satisfied, yes. But, I would rather have a new one. They have more power.:D

The truck has 80,000+ miles on it, but less than 50,000 on the engine. Ford changed the entire engine @ 36,000 miles because of "piston slap". Visit F150online to learn more than you ever wanted to know about these trucks. These trucks have a bunch of issues and F150online will alert you to them all.

My Mom has a 2000 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4L V8. She has just under 30K miles and has not had a single problem. She loves it!

I have a 2001 with a 5.4. Runs great except for a rough idle.

My previous truck was a chevy with a small v8. It had good

power but when it came time to sell it, too many people wanted

the big v8. This time around I made sure I had it in the truck.

By the way, I'm only getting between 12 - 13 mpg. That's no

big deal for me, but it would be for some people.

Thanks to the current (and future) respondents for their input.

F150BOB, thank you for the link. I have been lurking there off and on for the past 6 months or so. What year model is your truck?

blkxlt, 12-13mpg?? Is this common? I had hoped for a mininum of 15mpg in town. What kind of mileage do you get on the highway?

Mr. Clean,

I have a 97 Lariat SC 4X4. I get 11-12 mpg in town & 15-16 on the hiway. However, the newer trucks are rated at a higher mpg than the 97s. Most people seem to get better mileage than me. YMMV.

BOB

I have a 2001 S/C 4x4 5.4 with 28,000 miles and no problems. I get 13 to 14 around town. Just took a 350 mile trip this weekend over to Eastern Wa. and got around 15 1/2 driving 75. I have been happy so far. Mark

My choice when i bought my 2003 F150 4X4 Supercrew was the larger 5.4 engine. I've had it about 6 months and have just over 6000 miles on it now and have had no problems with it. I get around 11 or 12 mpg around town and between 15 and 16 mpg on the highway. I often carry several family members along with a bed full of SCUBA diving gear on dive trips. I felt the large engine would give me the extra power when full loaded. Best of luck and buy a step ladder for detailing it.

I haven't taken any trips to calculate the highway mpg. The

truck currently has 13,500 miles on it. I check the mileage

constantly and is always in the 12 - 13 mpg range.

Ok, it's not a V-8, but I just had to add my baby to the list of Ford truck owners. I have a 2003 F-350 PSD 6.0 liter CC 4x4 Dark shadow gray on black. I got a smoking deal on it since my soon to be bro in law sells them. I'm averaging 17.3 mpg but it's supposed to get better. I bought the diesel because the motor is warranteed to 100,000 and navistar says it should go at least 300,000 miles before overhaul!:xyxthumbs

I have a 1997 Ford F150 XLT 4.6L and I love it. I got it specifically as a second car and something to tow my show car with. I purchased it with 67K miles and have never had a problem with it.

Its the extended cab and I have plenty of room in the back seat for stuff. Great power as well..

2002 Lightning. Its a s/c 5.4L engine. no problems and I dont know what the gas mileage is and not sure I want to.. it doesnt seem to bad on the highway but when your foot is in it, you can watch the gas gauge drop in real time.. but wouldnt trade it for anything else out on the road.

I have a 99 F150 4.6L V-8 with 45,000 miles. I dont do much towing but when I do I can do it with no effort at all. Plenty of power. This truck has been absolutely trouble free since I purchased it new.

You should probably own some oil company stock;) Love the Lightning, but I need the SuperCab at a minimum, but would prefer the SuperCrew. The gas mileage being reported here is scary. I had a 351W '69 Cougar that only knew 2 speeds and I got 15 mpg steadily. I may check with J. Reynolds out at Prestige Ford and see what the 4.6L motor will do on mileage and performance.

What do you haul? Is that your daily driver? Don't sniff those diesel fumes too long j/k

Thanks again to all who have posted.

Sorry, this is not 5.4L related, but on the topic of MPG's. My Town car has the SOHC 4.6L V8 and it get's 17MPH city, and 22+ on the highway. Not too shabby for a two ton sedan. My Explorer however, 4.0L OHV V6, gets about the same mileage.

I have less than 3000 miles on my 03 4x4 F150 Sport. I have the 4.6l engine and manual transmission. I bought the 4.6 because I wanted to get a little better mileage, and with the 5 speed manual, I'm getting 15.7. It has plenty of power for what I do, light towing, hauling once in a while, and commuting. This one is black - which is why I am hanging aroung detailing sites ;)

When I want to go fast, I pull out the 68 F100 with the 390... :xyxthumbs

Mr Clean, it has crossed my mind, but drive granny most of the time to preserve the fuel.. actually, I could probably get by driving on regular if I dont rap up the supercharger too much or too often.

Love the Lightning, but I need the SuperCab at a minimum, but would prefer the SuperCrew.

Go get a Harley and get the SuperCrew with the super performance. I almost went that way, except for the price and didnt care for all the over the top badging in 2002.

Good Luck

dboat,

I have a red 2000 Lightning which has also been problem free. This truck is such a kick to drive, The only part I don't like, is having to park it during the winters.

Mr Clean

I agree with F150BOB, F150 ONLINE is a wealth of infomation about Ford Trucks. Covers all the various models, with plenty of feed back from owners in the forum sections.

If you need the extra room the Harley could be an interesting choice.

the L has been the absolute best vehicle I have ever owned..

I have a hard tonneau with a bedrug so its like having a huge trunk... with its handling and acceleration.. nothing else like it around... and I mean nothing...

dont you agree

as for winter driving, living in Dallas, there isnt too much of a problem... LOL

I haul precious cargo. 5 kids!:scared I also pull a little basstracker bass boat. It is also my daily driver. I bought it because I needed something to haul the lil varmints around in and I wanted something that would get decent fuel mileage. You can't beat the durability of the diesel motor not to mention the price of diesel now a days!:D The lil woman didn't want to do the burb thing, so we went with the aircraft carrier....er....F-350 Superduty CC Longbed. Man is this thing a joy to park!;)
